Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any Mediums :

Hi John,

I am starting to listen to more and more classical music and ordered some of the titles here. Please keep them coming. I am a neophyte when it comes to this genre and I appreciate your direction. I don't post here, like I should, but I lurk on this thread for sure. Thank you.

Well, you are not obligated to purchase every disc I post! However, at some of the Amazon sellers' prices, it's a bargain and a half!

Hi Joe,

Thank you--that both pleases me and gives me inspiration to continue.

Awesome!

I am trying to expand my musical tastes and ALL you guys here have given me plenty of direction. It's pretty amazing what you can find that I simply had no idea existed. Amazing indeed. I still don't understand all the variations and what to look for, but I can enjoy it immensely. Amazon will be dropping off a bunch of cd/sacds next week, I'm very excited.

I often stream WRTI Classical Radio at night. It can be wonderful.

Classical is a genre of music that spans over 1000 years of history and music styles pretty much follow patterns of art, architecture, etc...ie, mediaval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic....and each period has its greats. I love the sounds of the medieval, the precision and delicacy of the Renaissance and Baroque, the expanding complexity of the classical period and the explosive passion of the romantic period..then, late romantic, with the stunning colors of Respighi, Berlioz and R Strauss....

WRTI is a good place to start but if you can load up a program call iHeart, you can also stream two killer classical stations. One is KUSC in southern California and my absolute favorite, KMFA 89.5 (Austin Texas' fully listener supported, no commercials classical radio).......best of all, you can listen to these stations anywhere in the world!!

Developing what one likes in the world of classical is an adventure and takes time. I grew up listening to classical and now, at nearly 52, I still find new composers to learn about and enjoy.....

Cheers,

Thanks! I'll check out those stations and put them in my favorites. I appreciate the info. It certainly puts everything in perspective.

This Corelli series from Linn is pretty hard to beat from a sonic and performance perspective.

(They have also recorded Op.2 & 4 [paired], and Op.5--I eagerly await the pairing of Op.1 & 3.)

This disc arrived today, and oh my, is it a winner! Gergiev's previous release with Daniil Trifonov pales in comparison, both in sound and performance. This one is a bit more closely mic'd and weighty sounding, and Matsuev's playing is vastly more dynamic and robust than Trifonov's. Matsuev positively revels in the orgy of notes in the 2nd Concerto. No one can disguise its clumsy structure in places, but this thrilling performance makes one forget about the musical shortcomings.

Why? Don't you have an unlimited income for music purchases? Sometimes my wife must think that I do! :D Actually, CDs/SACDs are my main personal expenditures.

This disc was a pleasant surprise, as I had not heard of Vesselin Stanev before, but this recording contains some fantastic playing. I'd say he's less dreamy and cautious than Claudio Arrau, but he doesn't quite summon the demons that Lazar Berman coaxes from these pieces. Stanev is plenty powerful, though. So, if you like the music and want it in state of the art sound, I can easily recommend it. (It's a multi-channel SACD even though the front cover doesn't so indicate.)

Andre Previn & Alicia De Larrocha: Mozart Concerto and Sonata for Two Pianos

Was listening to Cyrus Chestnut, a jazz piano player just before this, and it got me in the mood to play more piano pieces. This is definitely one of my favorites. So much zest and energy in the music and their playing. One of my favorite pick me up discs!:audiophile:

Simply superb playing and sound. Regardless of how intensely they play, the Prazak's tone is always rich and full...due in part to the pure DSD recording, I imagine.

* Beautiful Bach cello music; and she can play it well too. :)

Did you hear this one?
Nigel North;
Bach on the lute.
He has rearranged all the suites for lute and the result is amazing.Very tasteful. It adds a whole new dimension to the Suites.

Linn is having a sale on all 4 volumes.
Highly recommended.

I swear, this thread is becoming like an addict looking at a crack house, a person on a diet walking past a bakery....so much tantalizing material....sigh....:D

My main problem with lute and guitar transcriptions of the cello works is that they cannot sustain the voices as long as the cello can, but I agree that they add a new perspective. My two favorite recordings of the Cello Suites, which have diametrically opposed interpretations are these two:

Lipkind is very grand and romantic, while Starker is more severely classical. The beauty of Bach's music is that it can usually withstand a wide array of interpretations.

I never heard the Starker set (much to my dismay) but I have heard the Lipkind.....I find his interpretation to be a wee bit on the strange side and if I remember correctly, he gets sort of mystical in his thinking...still, it is a fine performance...

Cheers,
