berillyum or ribbon tweeters? wich one has a livelier, natural, real sound?

The devil is in the detail, pun intended.

I am not aware of any other tweeter reaching beyond 150 kHz or even close to that. That is different from me thinking they are the best. If I would think so, I would have Lansches. Well, I do not.

Have heard both, Lansches and Accapellas. Their challenges do however not lie in the tweeter IMHO.

I've heard Lansche speakers a few times. There is a reason hardly anyone discusses them. As for Accapella, I've heard them a few times. IMO Avantgarde's have it all over them....especially now with the XD series.

But I will say this, the Lansche has an interesting tweeter. It doesn't sound particularly good to my ears, but it is interesting and different and that's not always a bad thing.

Best conventional tweeter I've ever heard is the Revel Studio2/Salon2. It's perfection. Period.

Best ribbon tweeter I've heard belongs to Raidho.

But like you said, there is a lot more to a speaker than just its tweeter.

Yup, agree on the Avantgardes. And now there is an update available on the XDs, which makes them even better. The build quality and technical sophistication is not the best in the Accapellas.

I have heard the Lansches playing quite nice with top shelve Jadis tube electronics, so the tweeter can sound quite good. But they definitely are nice to look at, the violet glow is mesmerizing.

The Revels or Raidhos I have not heard under sufficiently good conditions to comment. Anyhow, I am biased as a Magico owner :).

Mayabe have you heard any speaker with RAAL tweeter? if so, how would you compare them with the scansonic (or raidho) ribbons?
I can't recall hearing any speaker using the RAAL tweeter. Thing is I may have and not paid any attention to any specific tweeter. I listen for the overall sound. The only driver that truly impressed me the most was Raidho's diamond series. The reason being they remind me of a cross between a planner and conventional box driver. Dynamics are close to a box speaker with the speed of a planner resulting in a much blacker background with some dynamics. Again I would not limit yourself to a specific tweeter or diver. Listen for the best overall sound that lets you enjoy the music not just the details of individual instruments and vocals. If you do you won't hear the music.

The new Magico tweeter is superb. One of the best and those S1 mk2's surprised the heck out of me at CES.

I've heard a few RAAL speakers and actually now own the Vapor Breeze, which uses the RAAL 70-10D. One thing I can say is there is airy highs with no edginess or fatigue.

Beryllium tweeters are very expensive, probably very hard to find for a $3k budget. Odyssey Kismet monitors are a good option there though, I think they are $4k.

Best Be tweeter is TAD though... vapor deposited, 100 kHz extension.

Mike,

It's no coincidence that the two speakers you've mentioned as having the best tweeters, Revel and Raidho, are the ones I've owned. I am extremely sensitive to any brightness or edginess in the treble. In fact, it is the number one deal breaker for me. Tweeters that most listeners would be content with often drive me crazy. I've auditioned the Magico S5 and recently their new S7. I found the S5's beryllium tweeter to be edgy to my ears and I didn't really care for it, although many find it to be just fine. But the new diamond-coated beryllium tweeter in the S7 is a significant improvement, in my opinion. On the majority of recordings I listened to in my recent 3 hour audition, the S7's tweeter basically disappeared. The S5 tweeter stood out considerably more in my opinion.

Best,
Ken

Words cannot express how desperate I am to get a good demo of a Revel loudspeakers. I've heard just about every product within their lineup since 2005, and if I had to be honest with you guys......I just don't get it. The same goes for Raidho.

Ken, if you are very particular about the tweeters you might want to consider an audition of the Corona tweeter in some form, just as a mere learning exercise. I would argue it is not possible to make it sound edgy. Of course that is easier said than done in the US, as the manufacturer is Europe based.

In your statement you are however underselling your own understanding of music reproduction. It is almost meaningless to generically single out one single element in the chain of music material, room acoustics, cables, source, amplification, transducers and accessories as the best or worst. Of course you build up a system as a whole, e.g. using different cables and electronics in a system with Magicos or Revels or Raidhos, as each of the manufacturers have a different house sound.

That said, I have heard others say it before that Magico Beryllium tweeters might sound a tad hard if not treated right. But then again, which top end equipment does not beg for a proper chain set up?

Come see me anytime.

This thread makes me wonder how the new Focal horn loading Be tweeters (the ones found in Sopras) might fair against some of the top ones? After all that's Focal's state of the art, a manufacturer that has been using Be for their tweeters for longer than most counterparts mentioned above.

I sure liked it in the Sopra 1 when I heard it multiple times at RMAF.

When I heard the Sopras at a local dealer, I was impressed when feed by tubes.
