looking for new speakers, currently have a paradigm studio 20 v5. Im looking for a livelier, more real sound. I´ve been reading about some speakers:
the vapor audio stiff breeze
paradigm sig s2 v3 (i have heard it and like a lot!)
scansonic mb1

(no rear ported as they will be placed very close to the back wall)

Any suggestions? opinions?
thanks

I currently have the Vapor Breeze but they are rear ported as is the nice Kef LS50. Also you have the Harbeth P3ESR, the scansonic mb1, ATC Sm7 V3 all are nice sounding speakers as well. Do you have a price range in mind and how big is your room.

Hi CPP, thanks for your response, for what i understand, vapor sound can customize your speaker, i hope this means than can be front ported the stiff breeze. Mi top budget is 3000 but IF is a great deal (used), retail pirce budget is 2500. My rooms is 10.8 wide x 22 long x 7,6 ceiling. not treated, kind of bright really.

I think how well the tweeters are implemented with the speakers will make all the difference. I've heard berillyum I both loved and hated. Same with soft domes.

My best advice is to listen to as many speakers you can. Just because I like them doesn't you will.
Good luck

Hi octad, i wish a can have that option, the problem is that in my country I only have paradigm, totem and focal. i am planning to make a trip to US in the future, then i will pick the speakers, that is why my best options right know are the paradigm sig 2 v3, wich are the only one i have heard and like, the rest are too bright for me.

I agree with this bit! The resulting sound of a speaker is the result of more than its drivers, or the crossover, or the cabinet... It's the sum of the parts...

Fausto where are you located ?

Ryan at Vapor can do a lot, its best to send them a email and ask. http://www.vaporsound.com/contact/

Ps I have my Breezes about 21" from the rear wall

I´m in Ecuador. I will contact him in the future, first i have to fill my bank acount to not make him waste his time, actually im trying to find the way to identiy the sound of the raal vs a berillyum to make a better decission.

I haven't heard the Paradigms you are talking about but have owned Paradigm in the pst & heard many models. They are a speaker that delivers a lot for the price. If I was you I'd listen the Wilson Benesch line of speakers too, I think you'll be in awe of their top end. I went from Magnepan 20.7's to Wilson Benesch & not once have I missed that 5 foot ribbon tweeter.

I haven't heard Paradigm for about 8 years and back then to me they were too bright - well maybe not bright but too much sizzle. Those may have had metal tweeters that log ago. I am very familiar with Scansonic and to me that tweeter is very detailed and have a sparkle to them versus a sizzle. I was going to suggest MB 2.5's because they are a little bit more expensive than the MB1's with stands. They will also have a lot more low end. My dealer said they can be as close as 6 inches to side or back walls. That said they don't sound very good out of the box if new. Bass will be very one note sounding and thumpy. But once broken in you wouldn't think is was the same speaker. I've heard the break in takes between 2 - 400 hrs. As far as pre owned there are quite a few that have less than 50 hrs them. Also they image like crazy if you can get them about 9 feet apart and pointed to your shoulders sitting at least 9 feet back. If the MB1's were not set up like that they have been why they sounded bright... You see we have different expectations and preferences of sound quality. SO...

If when you come to the US try to come at a time and place where they are having an audio show. That way you will have the opportunity to hear more speakers than you care to. Take your time. You will know it when you hear the speaker that works and sounds the best with in your budget.

Best of Luck

I do have the Harbeth P3ESR in my small system and can only recommend them. They are a closed design and by their nature are a bit warm sounding. They are also in your price bracket and you can get pretty good pre-owned offers as well.

In general, I find that the ribbon tweeter has a more natural sound than the beryllium tweeter. The performance of beryllium tweeters can be highly variable based on its implementation. In the worst case, the beryllium tweeter can have substantial bite. However, in the best case scenario, such as the Revel Salon 2, they can sound quite smooth and extended. Again, it all depends on the implementation. I've owned both the Raidho D3 and Revel Salon 2.

Best,
Ken

I also find the Beryllium tweeters in Magicos nice, have owned several.

They go up to 50 kHz, so they're quite extended. Not all Beryllium tweeters reach that high up though, e.g. Focal.

Here is a twist to the thread: the by far most extended tweeter money can buy is the Corona Plasma Tweeter, as found in the Lansche or Accapella speakers.

They reach up to 150 kHz and are totally unconstrained and naturally sounding, as they do practically not have any mass at all. The sound is produced by an arc of light.

Have you heard the Lansche speakers?

I have.

Not sure the dogs have stopped barking yet.

The devil is in the detail, pun intended.

I am not aware of any other tweeter reaching beyond 150 kHz or even close to that. That is different from me thinking they are the best. If I would think so, I would have Lansches. Well, I do not.

Have heard both, Lansches and Accapellas. Their challenges do however not lie in the tweeter IMHO.

Fausto - As a Raidho owner I am a little bit biased if you haven't figured that out yet. ;)

Mayabe have you heard any speaker with RAAL tweeter? if so, how would you compare them with the scansonic (or raidho) ribbons?

OMG, LMAO!

Ken

In our summerhouse we have acoustic repellents to keep rodents away. Maybe the same effect could be achieved with the Corona?

The pitch is however so high, that it goes beyond the hearing range of dogs.
