Another Hypex NC-500 based amp unveiled

Wasn't everyone poo-pooing SMPS not more than a couple of years ago? I guess killer Soulution amps with their SMPS's changed that mindset pretty quickly....

We are a funny bunch.

How are you getting around the SMPS noise , specifically the AC line ...? Theta maybe using linear for such a reason ..

Read the comments from Bruno. The measurements don't show much noise either. Not an issue in my system.

No Theta is using it to make their amps big and heavy. Real audiophiles know a good amp is a heavy amp, and linear power supplies are better. So they are just giving them what they want.

Two sides to that technical coin , many in the "know" still prefer linear for obvious reasons and since audio is a sum process many type of cats can scale that wall , Hence "toobs" and "class-D", analog vs digital ...

It's all good ..

Yes because they don't know how to build a good one. And big and heavy sells. Real men like big and heavy things like monster trucks and dump trucks :)

There's switching noise, that's a given, then you have proximity issues, for you to assert others dont know instead of choosing not to use them , is intellectually dishonest ...

BTW, my first SMPS unit was used in a bespoked pre-amp i had built back in 1977, so I'm not anti anything ,,

The switching noise is completely cancelled out in the amps. Show me where the switching noise is?

My Nord amps really are great. I have the Sparkos op amp which warms up the sound a little. Class D has come a long way and I didn't like what I've heard prior to my Nord One Up amps. I am eager to get the new 994 op amps and new boards just to try a different flavor. Are these amps for everyone? No. Just like Soulution is not right for everyone either, never mind the cost difference.

I've been through a lot of gear. Theses amps are up there. They require hundreds and hundreds of hours of break in but what doesn't these days.

I'm ecstatic that we have all these choices. Just like tube rolling becomes a passion/obsession, so is op amp rolling becoming one. Special tubes are becoming extinct and new reissue ones aren't the same, usually. We all love music, we all love our gear. There are many ways to reach nirvana. Life is good. So enjoy the music through the system of YOUR choice. Experiment and make up your own mind.

We can all disagree, just please be civil to each other.

Hey, Easy guys ! :)

Your opinion got me interest in these products I might try one soon ;)

Just a bit of playful banter :)

If you order some here's what I recommend starting out with to play with for opamps:

Sonic imagery 994's:

http://www.sonicimagerylabs.com/products/Model994DiscreteOpAmp-Ticha.html

Sparko Labs SS3602's:

http://sparkoslabs.com/product/discrete-op-amp-ss3602/

Burson Audio Supreme v5 duals:

http://www.bursonaudio.com/products/supreme-sound-opamp-v5/

Audio GD Earth, Sun and moon dual's:

http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/diy/OPA/OPAEN.htm

LM4562 Dip 8 IC opamp:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/LM4562-Dual-HiFi-Audio-OpAmp-AUTHENTIC-LM4562NA-DIP-8-/160496917340

You need 2 of each. If you buy all of these, you will have 7 different amps to play with right off the bat, and will only cost you a couple hundred bucks! However the possibilities are endless. Especially if you want to get into using single to dual adapters.

I wouldn't be quick to judge they aren't for everyone without doing some opamp rolling :) The whole point of this concept is to allow these amps to be for everyone.

Ah, yes. I agree the tent becomes bigger. Wonderful choices and it's only getting better all the time. I believe. My fingers are crossed for others.

As a lover of tubes, I would grab the Audio GD trio. They are only 25 bucks a piece average. I really think the moons would be up your alley! :)

I don't know much about it yet. But I'm interest in mono UP model. Is that way to go ?

Also, all those opamp I have to buy from separate places ?

Do you think they will have any issues with my current input board?

Yes you need to get the one-up board if you want to be able to swap the opamps. The cheap board is just the Hypex OEM board based on the LM4562 IC opamp, and cheap 60 cent voltage regulators. I think Colin has some opampsxin stock, but otherwise, yes, they are all made from different manufacturers.
