Another Hypex NC-500 based amp unveiled

Have you heard/had a Devialet ... ? I suspect not as they do sound good and will only get better same as Hypex...

Yes I brought a system into a Devialet dealer's showroom who had a 400 setup to a pair of Focal Scala V2's. The system I brought in consisted of one of these cheap DAC's:

Connected direct into a discrete input stage, and then into a stereo pair of dual mono NC-500's. The difference was night and day. There wasn't a single salesman in the showroom that didn't agree that the Devialet wasn't even close. I also have a client with a 400 and when he heard the same setup at my place, he put his 400 up for sale :) These guys at the dealership are still bugging me to know what was in the box. :) However the Phison PD2 is light years better than the Mirand DAC. Although the same designer designed both.

Never heard a 400 , but a 400/400 setup and i was told by other devialet owners it was night and day to a single 400 , so you may want to go back and try again ...

The fact that my $1000 setup smoked the $18000 Devialet, was enough Devialet for me.

1000 is a bit disingenuous wouldnt you say , you already pointed us to one at 4600 and no dac or pre amp features as the devialet. anyway best you compare 400/400 vs 500/500, i believe we were comparing and discussing sonics ...

BTW did you level match

$1000 is what I had into the build. Isn't a $18000 system a fair enough comparison? Nord's standard NC-500 dual monoblocks are under $2000 a pair.

Again price is not being considered we are discussing sonics , to do so you should have compared 400/400 , those with single units told me the single was disappointing and no satisfaction until they went to 400/400 ...

Also if you never level matched then its not really valid , the non clipping amp and or louder played amp will sound better ...

So you are saying that it's not fair to compare them with my $1000 build unless I use $36000 worth of Devialet gear? I'm sorry but that's pretty unreasonable. Even if I use the industry standard multiplier of 6x BOM, (non greedy manufacturers) my system I compared with the $18000 worth of Devialet would only cost $6000 MSRP if sold through a dealer network.

Really i thought you were going to use the same ratios as mola mola .... :)

Im saying its a bogus comparision , compare both in mono config and you didnt say what software and or setup configuration the devialet were being ran in and less clear the air on this , i really don't care which sounds better , but you need to validate your absolute statements , how was this comparison done and did you guys level match , this kind of info is important for the rest of us , seeing we weren't there ...

Isn't a 400 2x 200's? There was 2 boxes stacked on each other.

We listened to both setups all day and all volume levels. Everyone there liked my $1000 setup better. And they were the ones selling it! Enough said.

No you said yours cost 1K ....who has nc500's for 1K

That was my cost. And it wasn't just the amps. It was a DAC and streamer in that box as well.

If Nords price is too high I recommend the Devialet 400's :)

I should buy one of these amps just so I can do my own comparisons.

But I can think of better things to buy - like more vinyl!

Now Mike, why do that when you can simply speculate that all Class-D amps suck, its much easier to judge from afar.

I thought we all sharks frowned upon speculation as to sonics without actual experience around here? Maybe not so with something as vile as Class-D though? Oh wait, maybe it's the price point thermometer....after all, the Devialet threads were non stop last year on the shark but that product line runs from $8k-$20k for entry.

What am I thinking?.....higher prices ALWAYS equate to better sound quality.

These amps are generally frowned upon because there's no way to make my money off them when guys like Colin are selling them so cheap. Acknowledging how good they are would pretty much kill the market for almost every sub 10k amp in existence. Unless you're into a low powered tube amp or something. But wait, there's an opamp that can emulate that too :)
