Another Friday night incident

On Friday night, after a week of work BS and stress, along with hitting the gym, I like to kick back, drink beer, and listen to the stereo. For whatever reason, it seems as if every time something weird happens (audio or otherwise) it happens on Friday night after a few beers.

For example, one Friday night I am in the recliner listening to music when I start hearing this strange screeching noise. It turns out the flexible water tube connected to the bottom of the toilet tank blew out, and water was just screaming into the bathroom, which is down the hall on the right side.

Another Friday, the right speaker died. Turns out a spade popped off the positive terminal.

Another Friday, my right Cambridge-Audio 840W amp died, with a valid failure.

Another Friday, I broke my right S5 speaker.

Last night, my right Pass X600.5 amp died. I powered it off/on, reset the power cord, and checked the circuit breaker. No help, so I moved into the HT/surround system. This morning I was hoping like crazy the fuse had blown, since Pass supplies spares. Before I pulled the 150 lb amp out of the rack to check the fuse I straightened up the power cables under the rack. Each amp is connected to a Shunyata Cyclops, and each Cyclops attaches to a dedicated circuit. Anyway, while futzing with the Cyclops I thought was attached to the left amp, I hear a boing and the right amp powered on. Believe me, I was happy to see that.

I guess I need to stop listening to the stereo on Friday, and only on Saturday. :)

Bud - that's crazy! Glad the story finished on a good note this time.

Bud-I'm happy for you that your Pass amp wasn't broken. It sucks when you can't relax after a week of work without something at home 'working' you.

Imagine if you had tubes!

That's why I don't know if I will ever own another tube power amp that has more than 2 output tubes per channel. Not saying I won't mind you, but I just know which one is easier and cheaper to maintain in tip-top shape.

Yikes! I never thought of that, and I have recently started wondering what a tube pre-amp would be like. On the other hand, I would have two spare pre-amps (Cambridge 840E and Pass XP-20) so it might be okay.

Bud, you need more practice! Just remember, "beer, it's not just for breakfast anymore"! :snicker:

LOL. You don't know me. In the Navy I repaired a hybrid semiconductor and tube radar on the F4B Phantom. More than once while troubleshooting a piece of gear the tube circuitry would go up in flames. It was actually quite impressive when that happened. Later, as a civilian electronics technician, integrated circuit designs with 5V rails were boring compared to the radar. Anyway, if I do get something with tubes I can very easily see it failing with flames shooting out. I do not want to deal with that on a Friday night. :)

Wow Bud, that was close. Glad you dodged the bullet. I wish you happy listening on Friday nights with no further incidents. After all, late night listening after everyone in the house has gone to bed is what it's all about.

Best,
Ken

Hey Bud, maybe you're drinking the wrong Beer ;)

Just kidding , I'm glad your Pass amp didn't pass out after all.

And I gotta say, that's some weird shit !

Since I have the next two weeks off, I will run a Sunday night test. Just beer, no hard liquor. For whatever reason, I have never developed a taste for it. Besides, the cat would be upset if he couldn't have a little beer. :)

I like the exorcism suggestion. Maybe I need to exorcise some gear out, and other gear in. It never ends.
