so i picked this up finally the other day, did some low-medium level listening for a few nights after work. . then today i put it through the test songs and it came through with flying colors. it was a demo with enough hours on it that i didnt have to worry about breaking anything in.
this isnt really a review ,im just putting it here because so few use this area. when i picked this up the guy who i got it from lent me this axiom2 volume controller, to see if i like it. its tiny and as you can see in the pics, my cables want to pull it off the back of the shelf. so i had to put some weight on it. yes it is my tape measure.lol. i got a rubber block somewhere that would be perfect, but i cant seem to locate it.
as far as the volume controller it does exactly what i need it to do. just has in and out rca jacks and is basically invisible, except for its primary function.
all i can compare this to(with all my gear)is my hovland w/ internal phonostage which was a great unit, that i loved. but when i went to hear this a couple weeks ago i realized that im living in the past, the romanticized liquidy presentation of the hovland was alot of fun to listen to, but it wasnt natural, and i always knew it. feels like it was just getting outdated a bit.
as soon as i plugged this in ,i knew i was going to love it. did it keep up with the allnic h3000 phonostage i also have heard a few times? no, but at $10k less than the 3000 it is so damn close its makes it difficult for me to see myself spending the extra money.
as all allnics i ever heard its about the soundstage first for me. its big and lots of air around all instruments, , and just better than my hovland could do. or alot of pricier phonostages ive heard. might just keep up with any ive ever heard at any price. the bass is a bit deeper than the hovland and when i just added these new sophia 300's to the mix it got even deeper and thicker without losing its composure and staying tight and coherent ,even when i was pushing it all day long.
it comes stock with nos mullard e180cc's(12AV7). which i havent seen in many applications. and the zero microphonic tube bases are pretty cool and keep it vitually silent. but you cant just pull a tube out because you will damage the suspension. so it comes with a tool to pop it out without putting pressure on the base.
it has adjustments for the cartridge in both the mm and the mc settings.
really great phonostage at an unbelievable value. only problem is that if i want to upgrade from here im going to have to spend alot more $$. so it may stick around for awhile.
my other choice was the zesto ph1, which i finally got to hear a couple months ago for a nice long session. its was a great phonostage as well, but was warmer and very similar to my hovland . the allnic has it beat in dynamics, bass, soundstage and price by $1400. in my opinion of course.

Nice write up Steve. Ever since you've started talking about Allnic this phono stage has interested me. It's sounds like a nice piece that could stay in a system for a long time. It always appeared bigger in photos but now that I see it on your rack it seems smaller. How tall is the front faceplate? I wonder how it compares to my Chinook?

That volume controller is cool too! Gotta love the tape measure. Has it been cryoed?

Nice write up, Steve! Sounds liked great piece of gear!:audiophile:

Steve

How does the Axiom work with this combo?
its just as you said it would be Jack. its just an in and out to turn the volume up and down. it will do the job until i either buy a pre, or get the integrated i been wanting.
thx for the advise!!!!

that tape measure was the closest thing to me when i realized the axiom was too light to hold it self on the shelf. ill probably just put a velcro strap on the cables to take the weight off it. the face plate is 12.5" x 5" its a relatively small chassis. and yes its black not silver. to match a future purchase!!!! i hope.lol.

thanks guys!!!

That sounds good Steve. I know you have your heart set on the Allnic Integrated, but have you ever heard or tried the Line Magnetics' Integrated Amps? They get great reviews everywhere and are inspired by the Western Electric gear. They seem to be priced much less than the Allnic gear and there build quality seems superb. There are no dealers in my part of the world. I think the distributor is in the Pacific NW. I would love to try one of the integrated amps and the CD player.

actually our old friend Bob is a line magnetic dealer. and in living stereo which is just a couple blocks from him is a line mag/ shindo/ devore dealer.
but im real impressed with this allnic company so far everything i heard is so good. their just $6900 300b integrated is as good or better than any 300b's ive heard(int or monos) at any price. i think their value to sound is incredible, even though some stuff is still pricey. ive been around listening for years, and can honestly say that i havent heard the amps or amps yet that even at 3x's the price id prefer over the $6900 t1500. heres a little history from the hammertone website, and the reason they can give you such a value.
one reason is they build all their nickel transformers in house. along with everything else.

ALLNIC is short for “All Nickel” which comes from the fact that all our output transformers are made with 78 percent nickel core perm alloy. This not only makes ALLNIC a one of a kind, listeners hear more of the lows and highs with the greatest dynamic range available.

With ALLNIC you can expect greater life expectancy from vacuum tubes as we use only New Old Stock Vacuum Tubes. Since they last longer you save money. We also employ our patented gel cap dampening tube sockets which isolate micro phonics eliminating unwanted external vibrations giving listeners the purest sound possible.

Good job Steve ! Allnic stuff looks cool !
thanks mark!! im hooked so far.i think from what i heard from raidho speakers and allnic phonostages, the match would produce the best soundstage available. there is a guy in dallas, porterhouse audio , you should call him and he will bring you an h3000 to hear in your system. i bet youd be hooked too.lol.

:exciting:

I'm broke Steve ! Those speakers did me in for a long while.
i know the feeling, i went the other way, now with new everything else i cant afford the speakers i want.lol.

Hey Steve, how about this one? :exciting:
