I made and mounted sound absorbing panels in my listening room today. Much better looking than the blankets thumb-tacked to the wall if I don't say so my self. When I saw the Beatlesque fabric on sofas at Ikea I knew I had to have it. It took 6 months but a sofa cover made it's way to "As-Is" and my wife snagged it for $10 after her employee discount. Originally I was going to have a friend make covers for my Poang chairs with it, but my dear wife also scored sheep sking pads for the Poangs out of As-Is for over a $100 off apiece. So the sofa cover was reworked in to these panels. I used 2x2 drop-in acoustic ceiling panels which are very inexpensive (16 for $36). The contrasting panels are covered in freebie burlap coffee bags from Bodhi Leaf Coffee Traders where I buy my green beans. Not counting staples and 23 ga micro pins just $50 invested.

I have 4 ceiling panels left, but ran out of fabric and staples, so I'll get more of both and make some more. I'm whipped, it was really hot today so for now I'm settling in for a couple of Sierra Nevada Tumblers and (what else?) The Beatles Yellow Submarine 2012 reissue. :smoke:

Awesome job John. I love the way it looks. I am sure the sound is so much better. My room was terrible until put a few panels up.

Wow funny this thread came up, I was just reading about acoustic panels and thinking about how I can make some.
Great job they look terrific!!

From what I'm learning there are better choices in material with much higher NRC values. Owens Corning 2" rigid fiberglass panels 705 FRK may be what I eventually use. I made these without any adhesive so I could experiment without damaging the fabric. The ceiling panels were just cheap and available at Home Depot.

Yes I like it, I'm thinking along the same lines. Of like the styro Insulation and sound proofing Insulation. But I was thinking the same. 2x2 & 2x4 frames filled with something . And some cool fabric over the top. I'm headed to a roofing and siding supply place for some materials this afternoon I will look for something there .ill let you know how it goes
Great thread!!!

Do not use styrofoam roofing insulation. That was my first thought too, but was easily ruled out. Closed cell foam is reflective. Rockwool or rigid fiberglass is what the on line acoustic supply guys all sell.

I picked up some 3" rock wool 2x4' it came in a package 6 from a local construction supply for 36 dollars. I plan on making some panels here soon

Nice everyone's making some panels. Lol. I'd like to make the ones for non important areas . Then I will buy some of the art panels for spots that are out in the open.
Thanks for the heads up on the foam boards. I just got back from the roofer supply store they didn't have anything interesting. Guess Home Depot is where it's at. What a out the pressed boards? It's like real dense Insulation with a backing. Kinda like rockwool I would imagine.

Ok you got me thinking hard on this. I was back at the roofing and siding supply yesterday and looked a little better. I checked out Gik acoustics and found they used Owens Corning 701
Insulation boards. I found the 703 and 705 boards. A pack of 12 that measure 2'x4'
Is like $54. They have 1",2" and 4" thick. I think 1" is perfect.
I'm going to get a pack and I already have loads of cheap wood to bang out some quick frames.
With my saws and nail guns I can knock out a bunch of frames in minutes.
Problem is the fabric, all I looked at is so lame. Lol I'd like a few decorative ones and some plain ones too. There is a fabric store by the paint store ill be at this week. I will look there.
Thanks !!!! You got me going on this , I'm going to fill my room with them. Lol since my sound just bounces around I will put em up 1 by 1 until I get to where I need to be

Steve
1" 703 is good stuff and if your getting 12 sheets for 54 dollars is a great deal most are selling 6 sheets for that price. But if your going to make bass traps they need to be at lease 4" thick 1" just not going to catch those real low frequency.

Cool thanks, I get contractor discount at those supply houses that non contractors arent allowed to go to. I think it was $54 for 12 but not 100% sure.
Bass traps I havent thought of yet.
I don't even know if I need these as much as I just want to change the boring look of my livingroom. And some dampening along the way can't hurt.
I realized today that my guitar hangs on the wall close to where my monitors sat.
And it has open f- holes as its a hollow body. I can't believe I never thought of it before but that things got to be vibrating all over the place. I'm gonna move the hanger today.

With the way your celling is you could do some cool hanging panels. I think it would already help is some ways with decay times with the way it's angled and not just flat.

Yea I do have some issues, that i can easily hear. Well I could hear when I had speakers.
Since I got nothing right now. Lol. But i remember them and I will fix them after I get the speakers in.
But point being I'd never get as cool of a fabric as the pics in this thread. The fabric I seen that I could buy is lame.

I hit the 'reset' button this weekend. Decided to take out the closet and use the space for either an Expedit for records or put the equipment in there and effectively widen the listening area for two chairs. Removing the cottage cheese ceiling where the closet was and skim coating the drywall is a PITA, but it will be worth it in the end.
