Wilson Audio • Yvette Loudspeakers

..Whats also pretty obvious , is how reviewers and the sort have a real credibility issue among current audiophiles ..

sadly so .....

I don't think this is new at all. Audiophiles have lined up behind a favorite (or favorites) as long as I can remember, at least since J Gordon Holt shook up the audio publication world way back when. Perhaps it seems more acute today due to the fact that things play out on the internet in hours rather than through the mail and over days and months.

There are many very good and thorough reviewers out there today. Some, as with MC and numerous others, have been at this for more than 30 years and have developed a strong following. Perhaps with all the internet noise today, it can take longer to get a handle on some of the newer guys, but they are certainly out there too. It's up to the reader to sort his/her personal wheat from his/her chaff.

I have a philosophy for reviews I adopted long ago: A review is a request for the reviewer to express his/her opinion on a product. Unless there is a factual error in the review (which publications give an opportunity to correct), it would be rude to tell someone from whom you have asked an opinion that their subjective opinion is wrong.

Need? No, want. After I heard how he made my AG's sound and Eric's M3's, it was a no brainer for the M3's in my showroom. They sounded excellent before and even better after. I set up the S1 mk2, S3 mk2 and S5 mk2 myself. They sound terrific.
+ 1. Jim Smith is a living gem. His book Get Better Sound is worth its weight in gold. Just a shame he lives a continent away :audiophile:.

Mine is less complicated , i dont read opinion columns straight to the test bench results , as i leave all listening opinions to my own ears and taste , exception being Mikey Fremer , he cracks me up , good entertainment ...

I'm hoping to, finally, reassemble my rig in my remodeled room this weekend. My speakers have an erector set and a cat door. I hope all the huffing and puffing won't blow the house down!

I can assure you, that my S5s had no lack of mid bass punch compared to any 30 or so (lost count) different speakers I had in my listening room, including Wilson Sophia 2, Sasha and Sabrina. Sompared to my W/P Sashas mk 1 that my Magico S5 mk 1 replaced, the bass from the magicos was much faster, cleaner, much more articulate, but at the same time had all the weight of Sasha's bass and went much deeper (low 20s vs mid 30s). It was actually suprising, as I expected the S5s to be much smoother (and they were) but the biggest difference was in the bass performance.

Speakers have been placed in the very same room, in almost same position.

Adam,

I'm in no mood to get in a pissing match with the Magico gang today. I'm glad they work the best in your room. I honestly should not have posted my thoughts and will delete.

Tbh, I'm not a particular fan of either Wilson or Magico. I've owned Wilsons previously and the M3 is the only Magico I've heard sound promising in many years.

Cheers

Touché!.

Keith, No need to delete your comments. It's just a bit of friendly banter, not Stereophile magazine. From my viewpoint, Adam was just opining his personal view.

I'm glad you liked the M3. It is a tremendous loudspeaker. Apologies for the slight side discussion, but for my own info, which other Magico speakers have you heard? The S5 Mk2's for example have the exact same midrange drivers as the M3. Of course there is a lot more to a loudspeaker's design, but there should be some family resemblance.

WA Bashing aside , big props to WA for keeping their new model pegged to at least compact car prices, about time some sanity got back in the game for a more " affordable " speaker product ...

The pulling power of WA, should make this a good seller ...

Wasn't there a TAS or Stereophile reviewer who dropped his Alexia's for Magico S5 mk2's?

Just to clarify: I have never owned Alexias. I have owned Sophia 2 and Sasha mk 1, and Avalon Eidolon Vision before that.

I have heard the Alexias quite a few times and think very highly of them, although IMO they were a bit too expensive for what they offer. However, as we say in Poland - your point of view depends on where you sit, so I bet there are people who would disagree with me.

I still admire Wilson as a company: the people that work there, the dealer's base, the product's quality of workmanship, the aftersale service they provide - it is all still tops in my book.

I've owned both Wilson and Magico. Three pairs of each.

In fact, I still own both Wilson and Magico. I appreciate the build quality on both.

I haven't heard the Yvettes or the Alexx. I would like to since these are designed by Daryl Wilson and I'm curious how sonics might have changed due to his involvement. Perhaps I'll get to hear them at Axpona.
