Who cares.......

Touché Well, where to start. I still stand by my original post, if I could remember what it was for, "&' I also reserve the right to do a "180˚" u-bolt if things get nasty & it looks like I'm full of shite.... so here goes!

The first post was to start a conversation based on my misgivings of the recording industry as we know it. What has become? What we have succumbed to! What we accept & what we shouldn't. Everyone knows that the procurer of hi-res is well heeled & gets what they want, as in , "now!" Not all are so well heeled but somehow they manage & the loop tightens. The price increases & then the plagiarism emerges, why should I bother. Hence the snowball effect.... All of a sudden everyone/artists, are doing the fast production thing, "hey, why bother, we're not getting a sustainable income so lets downgrade to mp3" This couldn't be any worse for an audiophiles way of thinking if you tried to design a bad environment for mediocrity in good sounding music! I am at this time so disillusioned about the integrity of the recording industry & very pissed off about what could have been & "what should be today". We are in a time of huge technology, &, as an audiophile I want to know where the fu*k did my last ten years, let alone god help me should I suffice with the fact that I've been doing this for a sh*tload longer, get me in terms of a better medium & playback possibilities, who is doing the misleading & who is leading? Have a thought here, vote with your ears.......Listen to your alternatives, see what you think, that is all I'm proposing. This is something that I have had so close to my heart since i was in my late teens & now, I've had enough....... How do we make it better......!!!

kiwi, great post! So how do we solve what is obviously something that has gone wrong?

Well the trends shown in that chart are certainly better for the masses - cheaper music made more freely available. It obviously sucks for the industry, but then again, the industry has been screwing the artists for decades and is long overdue for a change. Technology has made that possible. So revise your strategy or fade into the past. Happens in every industry if you are lethargic.

The real question is what does this mean for the artists? In the 60's and 70's I think they had a bit more room to keep their artistic freedom. In the 80's and 90's and 00's the producers slowly took over and it became a very different game, screwing the artist out of just about everything. Now many artists are becoming independent and selling their material directly to the public and regaining their ability to write and play what they want. I see this as a good trend overall, but how it plays out in the end is still to be seen.
