Today I wanted to find out what it is all about with these special high quality re-issues. Are they worth it, or is it just about the labels making more money by selling some doofus the same record for the fourth time. I’m being very scientific here, operating based on a sample of one [emoji3].
So, here we go: a real jazz gem, Gerry Mulligan meets Ben Webster. One of the all-time great jazz LPs.
Right corner: Verve 180g re-issue, from the original label I believe.
Left corner: Acoustic Sounds 200g re-issue, mastered from analogue master tapes.
First of all, both are listenable. But that’t it with the commonalities. The regular Verve version is ok, pretty much the details in there and all, but I get the feeling you do not really need a +20K vinyl rig to enjoy all the subtleties of it. If you you need analog at all for that matter.
The Acoustic Sounds re-issue is bourne from anutha mutha, a fine piece of engineering indeed. It has much more thereness in the sound, in every instrument. Both saxes have more texture, the bass is more like stand-up precision machine, Jimmy Rowles touch and phrasing on the piano comes through in an immaculate way, the Gretsch drums just sound great.
Price difference was maybe €20.-, sound difference is a million bucks.
Just try the same test at home, maybe I’m just smoking something (I am indeed, Romeo & Julia, Petit Churchill), and hearing little green men.
