What Vinyl Do You Have On The Table?

Grimes ‎– Miss Anthropocene - brand new album from Canadian artist Claire Boucher on 4AD records.
This sounds amazing - superb Indie electro pop but with Burial dubstep beats thrown in.
check this out as Grimes is doing something different musically to most.

Inspired by Slowgeezer, wonderful Speakers Corner re-issue of Stitt plays Bird. In every respect a gem.

Very refreshing new jazz LP, not just referring to the vinyl color.

Today I wanted to find out what it is all about with these special high quality re-issues. Are they worth it, or is it just about the labels making more money by selling some doofus the same record for the fourth time. I’m being very scientific here, operating based on a sample of one [emoji3].

So, here we go: a real jazz gem, Gerry Mulligan meets Ben Webster. One of the all-time great jazz LPs.

Right corner: Verve 180g re-issue, from the original label I believe.

Left corner: Acoustic Sounds 200g re-issue, mastered from analogue master tapes.

First of all, both are listenable. But that’t it with the commonalities. The regular Verve version is ok, pretty much the details in there and all, but I get the feeling you do not really need a +20K vinyl rig to enjoy all the subtleties of it. If you you need analog at all for that matter.

The Acoustic Sounds re-issue is bourne from anutha mutha, a fine piece of engineering indeed. It has much more thereness in the sound, in every instrument. Both saxes have more texture, the bass is more like stand-up precision machine, Jimmy Rowles touch and phrasing on the piano comes through in an immaculate way, the Gretsch drums just sound great.

Price difference was maybe €20.-, sound difference is a million bucks.

Just try the same test at home, maybe I’m just smoking something, and hearing little green men (I’m indeed, Romeo & Julia, Petit Churchill, that is).

I’ve come to the conclusion that Chad is incapable of making a bad record. Analog Productions pressings have become the gold standard.

I took Chad’s two Elvis albums to a clients the other, a BIG Elvis fan. He played me what he felt was the best of a couple of selected songs. I then played the AP pressings. Game over. He about jumped out of his chair, grabbed a pen and said, “what’s that website again?”

Get yourself some Music Matters SRX when you get a chance.

Very well played and recorded album. Theme on the opener made me first hesitate a bit, as it was all too basic. But then it came back together in the solo part.

The LP has a certain immediacy to the presentation. Played it a couple of times, as it was so nice.

Bach Starker - Suites for...

Analog Productions 45 rpm box set

Simply amazing, while I read a lot that this genre is best suited for digital, not in this case.

Mad Season ‎– Above - original 1995 US pressing. almost forgot how good this is.

Screaming Trees ‎– Sweet Oblivion - 1992 original US pressing. superb sound. in the middle of the early 90's where music companies were actively trying to dump vinyl - quite funny ltd etd 'ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE LIMITED VINYL VERSION' on the plain black cover.
Who would have thought they would still be selling vinyl in large numbers now.

Forgot about the S/T’s, they were present during what is now considered indie rock.

I was about to order this, as this is some of my favorite classical music. But then I saw comments from Madfloyd, who has a cutting edge system with a very detailed playing Lyra Atlas cart, and both the SC and the AP versions.

His comment was that he did not hear much of a difference between the versions. As I have had other good experiences with SC, I went with a that version after all (I was still able to get my hands on a new pressing in Germany).

Not to say that I find AP releases not to be excellent, polar opposite is the case. Maybe the €69,- vs. €239,- price tags had something to do with that decision as well.

Tindersticks ‎– Trouble Every Day (Original Soundtrack) - beautiful album from a stunningly good band

Depeche Mode ‎– Spirit - 2017. not a bad album, but seeing them play live in Amsterdam 2017 was one of my concert highlights, ever.

The ever powerful and flawless young Starker interpretation in its Speakers Corner re-issue.

I can find no fault in this release, sonical or other. If the recent Analogue Productions release is better, it must be really good.
