What Vinyl Do You Have On The Table?

my understanding is that it is cut from the original tapes... however, there seems to be some question as to whether or not there is a digital step in the (ampex?) tape machine used in the cutting process.

given the mofi debacle, i did some more online research into this release of tommy: in a 2017 interview with miles showell, the mastering engineer for this LP and other abbey road half-speed masterings, he described the process used:

"... So I always prefer to capture, very high resolution digital. I’ll do a vinyl specific transfer, so I’ll be capturing it to the workstation as if I was cutting it. No massive compression, to reduce the dynamic range, no crazy limiting which is what you put on a CD to make a CD sound loud. So I do a transfer which is clean, fix any problems and run that at half-speed into the cutting lathe...”

so, it appears this pressing is in all liklihood ADA as indicated upthread by @j3brow.

as in the case with mofi, the marketing material is ambiguous/silent on the issue and the casual consumer would just assume it to be AAA. i certainly was not aware of the digital step when purchasing this LP.

Glad to hear it sounds good, i might pick this one up, already have the Classic pressing. But I would imagine it’s highly unlikely to be AAA. Typically Abbey Road Studio half speed masterings with Miles Showell are cut from hi-res files. Is this one an exception??

I don't think it will come anywhere near the Classic pressing. Things like the Classic pressings of the Who, Crosby Stills and Nash, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix are great records.

I don't have a good pic of this old obscure album. This local Philly band played a show in my Jr High School auditorium in 1975 and I loved this music from the start. Gave all my albums away in '88 but was able to find a pristine copy in a used record store last year.

Forest Green self titled album. Here is a youtube of the whole album if anyone wants to skip thru it for an idea of how good these guys were.

Trying to post pic of Floyd's remastered "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"... playing on Garrard 301 + SME 3012 series ll.

Just can't see how to do it so you will need to use imagination!
