Hi,

Just did a stupid thing.

I don't know a thing about analog, but do have a smashing digital system. Nevertheless, I felt compelled today to buy myself an analogue rig. Huh?!?

Well, it is not Mike's Kronos, but a simple EAT C-Sharp with an Ortofon MC Quintet Black. It is a relatively modestly priced turntable, but it will do the spiel for me - for now at least.

The valid question however is, what will I use it for? Maybe you can help out. I just got started to buy some vinyls. What is your best one?

Cool, thanks for sharing!

Find yourself an original Mercury pressing of Yello - One Second:

These are EXPLOSIVE recordings that will show you what the vinyl format is capable of providing.

Kuoppis...what kind/genre of music do you like?

In general, in terms of the reissue labels out there today that are putting out quality vinyl and that most of the time are going back to and mastering from the original analog master tapes:

Analogue Productions / QRP
Music Matters
Mobile Fidelity
Warner (WEA/Rhino/etc...) reissues (typically use one of the top mastering engineers and pressed either at RTI or Pallas)
Speakers Corner (German reissue label)
Friday Music

Older audiophile reissue labels no longer in operation but you can still find their pressings:

Cisco
Classic Records

So-So current reissue labels:

Music On Vinyl

SO if you go to AcousticSounds.com, MusicDirect.com, or ElusiveDisc.com and search by these reissue lables, you can see what's out there and then search by the type of music you enjoy. Hope this is helpful.

Appreciate it. This will be an interesting comparison, as I do have the exotic dances on SACD and maybe even as DSD download.

Thank you so much, this is phantastic data and will help me built up my vinyl treasure chest.

As to the music, I am basically a rock'n roller. Do have ten nice axes in the basement with a bank of analog effects and a Mesa Boogie stack. Thus 80's rock and well played blues is always appreciated.

That said, when I was a kid my parents took me to the opera quite a bit and I got exposed to orchestral music at school and started going to classical concerts later on.

But my audiophile heart is in jazz so far, preferrably small ensemble and vocals with an individual characteristic.

So, as you see, I am an all you can eat in terms of genres - as long as it is well played or is based on true artistic merit. Should I say, as long as it is good :).

Not very helpful, I am afraid, but so me.

Thanks Mike, that's good stuff, greatly appreciated. Most of those I do have on CD/ ripped in AIFF. Now I will have to see how they sound in analogue.

Keep the good stuff coming, if you would.

Thanks, great album. Already have it on CD and DSD - that's calling for a vinyl shoot-out.

Pulling from a younger audience, such as myself. How about Morcheeba: Head Up High. The sound is off-the-hook!

+1 will be using this album to test my tape recording paths.

Anything else also labelled "Analogue Productions" is guaranteed to sound as good.

Time Out - The Dave Brubeck Quartet is another fine example.

Good for you welcome to the Dark side.
The rules are never buy more than 20 Lps a week
Always listen till 3 am the power is cleaner
First pressings from England
Never sell a Lp
Never tell family how much it cost ( they may have you locked up )

Try to find a direct to disc LP and be prepared to be blown away.

Do you mean a DMM mastering, as used e.g. by the Stockfish label from Germany?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Stockfish DMM process. I think DMM is different. I'm referring to the process where they skip the magnetic tape portion of recording. Since the original poster is into Jazz, one can check Analogue Production's D2D records. I can't claim to know how these sound as I am not into Jazz. Others might have more experience.

I've never heard one, but I understand they can be fantastic recordings: M&K (Miller & Kreisel) D2D recordings like these:

Some history:

Thanks for the insight. I think Stockfish is actually using a similar process for SACS, but I'm I would guess the origins are in vinyl.
