What are you watching?

Agreed Bob.

We need more of this:

Bob and Doug,

I respect your opinion, but no, they were in eight separate movies. The last two movies were based on one book. Another example: For Your Eyes Only, a Bond Book had three movies made from it: FYEO, A View to A Kill and A Quantum of Solace. We don’t say three separate movies. And, technically, Lord of the Rings was one book, and we don’t say it was one movie. Oh yes, The Hobbit, another three movies, was just one book.

I am currently writing a second book on Marvel, this one to be published, I believe, in April. Doug, I think the Wolverine makes a betting “supporting” or ensemble character than a headliner. Jackman does it well, but the character is not supposed to age and he is! But I bet he is offered a lot of money to continue and I’d take it too.

Sadly, these days, movies are so expensive they cannot be about art, the are only about money. Every time a movie does well, Cars, Matrix, Fast and Furious, Anchorman, Lord of the Rings, etc. there are uneventful mostly boring sequels (which are more often badly done and disguised remakes) Yet the public goes and sees them!

Yes, but Barry; 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' is specifically enumerated as Part One and Part Two. ... The movie.
It was simply too long for the theater venues; so they simply split it in two parts. ...Same as 'Kill Bill' Vol.1 and Vol.2

LOTR (EE) is 12 hours; no way you can make a single movie that long! ...The trilogy for home (at the theater it was 10 hours).

I fully agree with you on your last paragraph.

________________

Another thing: To pay an actor $20 million dollars for acting in a single movie tells us some' about the art direction of cinema today, and yesterday too. ...Tomorrow we'll never know. ;)
It is very sad that us, the public, we are buying into this 'wave'. But it is what it is. ...And it ain't no art at all, just dysfunctional money allocation, financial and false values mismanaged in a world that just tries to go too fast in the wrong direction; without soul, without heart, without creativity, without intelligent imagination and beneficial development (evolution) for our entire societies. ...Simply put; wrong life's values.
Hey, this is just entertainment!

- "What did you do with your time on Earth; what job?"
- "I was an actor/actress. ...I made people cry or/and laugh, and anything emotional between. ...I entertained people, through the movies."

...Like a musician, a singer, an orchestra does through music and songs.

Nothing's wrong with that; it's up to us to select the material that's good for each one of us. And depending of our age and education and personal "levitation" in our own life's perception along our own journey here on planet Earth; it varies a whole lot. ...From extremely violent films to very peaceful ones. ...And from pure fiction to absolute reality.

P.S. Btw Barry; you didn't have to mention that you respect our opinions. ...If you didn't you wouldn't be here telling us about it. :D

I don’t mind hearing how much an actor makes, I’s a distribution of wealth.

Movies cost no more at a theatre based on an actor’s salary. He is most often these days the draw. If he doesn’t get it, the studio does, it not refunded to us. But that is capitalism, democracy; no one is forcing the studios to pay him that fee. Hey, we routinely get movies now making nearly one billion dollars. Would the Avengers have made 1.5 billion without Robert Downey who got $50 million? And who would have kept that money if he had worked for free?

Same thing for Baseball players, no one is forcing the owners to pay that munt. And if you think tickets prices would go down if they were paid less, you are wrong. The only thing that will bring down prices is when fans refuse to pay for them.

And, Harry Potter was always planned to have a two movie conclusion. Part one and Two were even used by Shakespeare for two separate plays!!!!! And the actors, directors, cameraman etc had two separate contracts for these movies. Look up Silkind clause!!

Most important, have a happy and healthy holiday!!!!! It's been a fun year talking to you about movies and TV!!!!!!!!

Robert got $50 million for his small role in 'The Avengers'! :bonkers:

How come aren't we all actors/actresses? ...Or golfers, or footballers, or basketballers, or hockeyers, or tennis players, ...

Because some of us are musicians, or music lovers, or gardeners, or cooks, or crooks. ;)

Merry Christmas Barry & Happy New Year! :)

It wasn't really a small role. I believe he got $20 and a percentage. he spoke about this, it is not a rumor.

Marry Christmas, Harry New Year! And let's both become super-heroes in the Next Avengers movies. hell, I'll do it for half of what Downey got.

---- :D ...Yep, we'll both do (for half of Robert's wages). ...Iron Man.

* Batman (Christian Bale) refused a $20 million offer to play only 2 minutes in 'Batman 4'!

Let's move to Hollywood. ...And apply for a new job; like Batman, Iron Man, Spiderman, Superman, Thor, Green Hornet, Green Lantern, X-Men, Wolverine, Fantastic-4, Man with no Face, ...any comic superhero with superpower.

U-571

Someone referenced this movie and I saw it last night. Great visual and one of the best DTS_HD soundtracks I have heard. But it's a bad movie. It borrowed so many cliches from other sub-mariner movies (and Star trek) that I felt I had seen it before.

Can't stand watching that movie anymore. ...The acting is so ...'plastic'. ...Gimme 'Das Boot' anytime over this.

It's funny you mentioned Das Boot. I saw K-19 The Widowmaker, a true story with great actors and really liked it. The story was not the msot compelling, but eh actors were great.

I love that flick directed by Kathryn Bigelow; 'K19 The Widowmaker' - True story and very powerful (emotional) one indeed. ...Great acting.

'Crimson Tide' - Fantastic acting, good entertainment, first class under (sub) water action!

'The Hunt For Red October' - Also a great submariner flick.

Now we're talkin'! ...That's great entertainment of premium value! :entertaining:

* And 'Das Boot' of course.

P.S. How do you make the "star" symbol?

When you tlak about submarine movies and their formulas, you should also talk about Star trek II. it is really a submarine movie.

For some reason a lot of things these past few weeks have brought me into the 1960s.

There was a great documentary on Ray Harryhausen which not only showed scenes from some of the great movies I enjoyed, but had comments by current filmmakers on how he influnce them.

Then they should a movie I saw maybe 50 years ago, “First Men on the Moon.” While the movie may have been fun then, it sinks in its own formula now. Back then sci-fi movies, this one included often took 45-60 minutes to get started. Star Wars and James Bond broke that. So I am basically bored for 60 minutes until they get to the moon. Of course they travel in business suits and ties and their space suit allows them to be bare handed on the moon. This was all fantasy, no logic at all…so it stopped being fun. Also, sadly, it is told in flashback so there is no suspense as to what happens to the characters. RH did better in his other kinds of movies, such as the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] Voyage of Sinbad and Jason and the Argonaunts.

Barry, I am not a Star Trek's fan; never was and never will. It's just the way it is for me.

Did you ever see the flick 'Pandorum'? ...It's a sci-fi. ...With a major twist at the end.
{I won't give you any hint (spoil the essence), and don't read about it if you didn't see it yet.}

_________

- Old Classic submarine movie: The Nautilus. ... '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' (1954). ...That one on DVD.

-- James Bond's flicks: I can think of two or three with submarines in them.

...

Got those on Blu-ray, + more from that genre and era; 'The Golden Voyage of Sinbad' -> see screenshot taken from it below.

-> (1973) I was a young adult by then. :)
{Did you notice? ...Towards the left and up; ...an illuminated star, the North Star.}

...These were my favorite adventure/fantasy/sci-fi flicks when I was a young kid.
And 'The Time Machine'.

Bob, I didn’t refer to Star Trek but to Star Wars. If you recall the movie opens with an action shot and fills the plot in as it goes. It takes First amen in the Moon an hour to get to the plot.

Ah sorry Barry, my mistake.

* Not a Star Wars' fan either. :) ...Same as Star Trek's flicks; too cheesy in stories, dialog, and plastic actions in plastic worlds.

I'm more an Alien sci-fi type of guy (Ridley Scott), and Lord of the Rings fantasy guy (Peter Jackson).
...Italian spaghetti westerns too; Sergio Leone. ... & Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey

Sorry Bob, my mistake. I thought you were referring to the post I did on First Men on The Moon, when I mentioned Star Wars. YOU MUST respond to my posts in the order that I post them!!!!!! :) I am a fan of Trek, not of Wars and 2001 is my favorite movie! I thought Alien and Aliens were terrific. I even liked Terminator I and II.

Tonight I am watching Blade and maybe Blade II if we have time. I saw "Saving Mr. Banks" and really enjoyed it. More on that later.
