What are the best sounding/clearest recorded LIVE RECORDINGS as 2 channel stereo electronics/speaker test music

Re: What are the best sounding/clearest recorded LIVE RECORDINGS as 2 channel ste...

Paul: Wow - how cool for find out about the 12" discs... Obviously I need to investigate where to acquire these. I'll generate a list of what I consider the dreat music in my collection (both Live and not live music), and then find out what's available.

Thanks again. Best Wishes. Bill

Why the comment about a great system being needed: power? resolution? wide dynamic range? odd sounding instruments? -or what???

Never heard of Mary Stallings but will investigate her and this recording.

Thanks for the info... Best Wishes. Bill

Bill, I usually purchase my vinyl new from online stores like Elusive Disc, Music Direct or Acoustic Sounds. I am sure I forgot to include others. Where I live, record stores are not in abundance. CD's, I like to purchase from Amazon used in like new condition since you can purchase so many of them for just a few dollars.
Sorry about not being clear. I don't know what kind of system that you have for digital or analog. For me spending $40 - $50 for a 45 rpm record is quite expensive. Just ordered Jennifer Warnes - The Well, 45 rpm 3 record set for $90 and am still not sure how much I will like it over an inexpensive CD. Before I upgraded my TT I only purchased CD's and SACD's since my CD/SACD player sounded better than my TT.

Just curious where did you find it on SACD?

I ordered it first on eBay but then got an email saying it was listed by mistake. I just ordered it again on Amazon.

Paul: I've been enjoying the re-issue of the Jennifer Warnes 'Famous Blue Raincoat' CD: my Marantz SA 8001 SACD with the Onkyo A7 Integrated as a preamp (using the pre-outs) and the Nikko DC Alpha 230 gives me a view deep into the recording (don't have the vinyl of this - don't even know if it is available on re-issued vinyl) but on some things (especially the STOP MAKING SENSE) my JVC QL-A7 TT sounds amazing...

Will investigate the sources you listed - Thanks again. Best Wishes. Bill

Bill, Famous Blue Raincoat is available on vinyl still for $200. I couldn't justify it when it was $129. I am content with my 20th anniversary edition CD remake until they decide to reissue it again on vinyl at a lower cost.

Mostly dynamics: it's amazing what a single voice (with a jazz trio) may require.
Also, on lesser systems the voice may become harsh - methink it's about 'laying it all bare" as system integrity goes. Not easy to explain: I have another CD that makes me feel the same - Stradivarius on Gold CD - sounds gorgeous on well balanced systems (regardless of hardware price) but any unbalance is a road to violin hell...

great thread, i got some great ideas for new vinyl!!!!!
im more of a guy who listens to what sounds best no matter the genre and less of my favorite bands on my home stereo. these albums are right up my alley. thanks for starting this!!!

This one is pretty good.
Wynton Marsalis/Eric Clapton

This one is ''recorded in front of a live studio audience'' as they used to say in the introduction to various sitcoms, so I don't know if it qualifies, but it is a sublime sounding album.
On the site you can hear almost the whole tune or download one of the samples.

18.Bobby Timmons trio;In Person. I love Ron Carter, the bass player, and he is magnificently prominent here, talkin' 'bout DEEP BASS.

If you've got your setup where it needs to be, any of these will give you a true sense of the venue...

Clifford Jordan - Live at Ethell's
Carmen McRae - Sings the Great American Songbook (Live at Donte's)
Hugh Masakela - Hope
Harry Belafonte - Both Carnegie Hall albums
Frank Sinatra - Sinatra at the Sands
Wynton Marsalis - Live at the Village Vanguard (7 disc set)

This LP is my absolute favorite;
Unfortunately, the Phontastic Crescendo recordings are hard to come by digitally. The sound is great, and the live swinging tracks demonstrate why the band was such a club attraction. Best of all, the band probably didn't know it was being recorded, allowing for a relaxed, powerful delivery.
see article 'Count on the Coast': Basie, '58 - JazzWax

Does somebody know if there is a good digital version, Hi-res remaster available somewhere?
