Well respected speakers that you don't like

Don't worry Joe, I'll come back to New York and help you push them out the window as you asked. I suspect Steve will ensure they get a soft landing!

Oh you know I'll bring a feather mattress , for a real soft landing.
even if my snappers don't do well with them I'll leave them sitting there cause they
just look so cool

Steve,

The Snappers would be wonderful on my TADs. As long as you don't turn it up to 11, you will be fine.

:satisfying:My Carver 20 wpc amp sounds better than you'd think on my TADs.
ha I never even read those in your sig.
Reminds me the ear stuff is gonna be nice!! Everything they make is great value

The EAR 868 preamp shows up on Monday. The 890 amp in a week or two after that.

For me...the JBL 1400 Array's...........i have heard them many diff times with diff SS amps and tube amps ......i just dont get this speaker at all!......The bass is boomy and the midrange is lacking, not to mention very bright......also i find them UGLY as hell.:olga:p_JBL_1400_Array_BG_2218.jpg

Well well, you guys got a head start on me. I had someone ask me today how i keep picking very good components, I told him about this place & why. What i don't do is prescribe to the skinny assed Raidho's........... just joshin....I do sometimes wonder though about rooms & set-up though. This is a great site where the butt hurt stuff isn't needed,.... maybe we could do a monthly prize for the worst recommendation, I've got a shitload of eighties cd's that I'd just love to frisbee across the pond. As for speakers, for me it is Martin Logan Summit X. Used to love them had my own pair, then bought Sonus Faber Stradivari, tried them in the system 3 months later & put them back in the boxes for good until sold, never done or been like that since, really surprised me. For the record, I don't think I'll ever own another SF speaker either, just don't like the level of melding that they do....

Also I will promise to live another day even if that TAD speaker image remains posted in this thread.
Nick
Ha!
I may even post a photo of mine :)
Oh, just one more thing...

That was funny.
I appreciate the way you all take this. Of course I do understand that the following is true:
you just need to feed them properly

Only at a place like AudioShark can you have a thread like this go 3 pages long with no outbursts, no fights, and no name calling. People at the Shark are intelligent, sensible people who know how to remain objective and have a fun conversation without taking things to a personal level. I love the Shark!
You are so right! We are at 6 pages and it is still valid. I love the Shark too. Mike thanks for inviting me to hang around here. Maybe some day we're going to meet. Are you guys visiting High-End in Munich next year? It is probably the best opportunity to hear and see nearly all brand and products in one show. For those of you not familiar with it here is a nice impression:

Question: does everyone think this is ok?

Hans - Some people might get offended if they see their speakers here.

If everyone understands this is just an opinion....then I will allow it.
Sorry Mike, I guess that was my naive European mind. Anyway as socfan mentioned your forum has real people who are not offended that quickly and don't take everything personal. Great forum, great people!
This should be a interesting and fun thread that could get derailed. Let the games begin.
Sorry no derailing here buddy! Only nice audio fanatics.

The 801s were a great speaker. Many audiophiles still swear by them. I wish B&W didn't discontinue the most recent 801D model. That was the ultimate 801, imo. And better than the 800 and 802 as well.

801N & 801D AKA the washing machine
I used to dream about the 801N when it came to the market about 10 years ago. Of course I was younger and more hungry for big woofers. Now I even think the dimensions are out of proportions. By the way my dream ended roughly when I heard the 801D 5 or 6 years ago: very nice and clean high section, bass not fast enough and overall not creating excitement.

Although I haven't heard every speaker in their lineup, B&W just doesn't do it for me. They have great engineering, R&D, marketing, etc... but I just don't care for their overall sound. Maybe I need to hear the Diamond series.
The same happened to me. Like the 801 story I didn't like all of the 800 series. The diamond tweeters of the D-series sounded sweet but the whole package not enough emotions. So actually my interest in B&W generally was at a very low until I started reading reviews about the complete new sound of the Diamond series. So I started to build some interest in the 800 Diamond (because in my mind the 802 Diamond would not be capable of producing enough bass anyway).
And then I was at a dealer and was asking if he had a set-up with the Focal Scala Utopia and he ask me if I didn't want to listen to the new Diamonds. I told him about my previous experience and he said why don't you give it a try: these are different.
And I can tell you: no more Mr. nice guy! This speaker was bringing emotions in the room. Still the sweet high, but now with an emotional and spatial stage, a deep and even loud bass. I was sold! I know it is probably not the very best speaker on the market, and for one I haven't auditioned a lot of speakers (like Raidho, Revel) but I am still very happy with the sound. I know I have created this thread about the things we don't like but allow me to spend part of your screen telling what I like about the 802 Diamonds . This is the review conclusion of German magazine Stereo. FOr what it's worth: I think this is spot-on:
802_Di_conclusion_Stereo.jpg

It says:
The high-mid section in the Marlan head is really quite a bit smoother and finer than in the previous version, and thank to it's top notch mid range speaker even more convincing than the 805 Diamonds that is highly ranking speaker in the book-shelve class. The bass section is for adults! It is not playing too present but is there to rely on. It comes full bodied but brings it to the listening spot; without getting overblown filling rooms with 25 square meters easily. But also with smaller bands the 'new guy' proves sensibility, creating a live atmosphere that with good recordings definitely gives you gooze bumps. The sound coluors, the sound staging and the precise timing are famous already, leaving it's predecessor, and not only that one, far behind.
A speaker in the super league, if possible the speaker for life- and with that for critical audiophiles worth every cent.

I actually like the 802D's....but didn't care for the 800D's.
I didn't like both of them. First when the Diamonds came I was on board. But between the two: it is amazing how good the 802's are.

A couple of others....

Paradigm S8's.....I find the tweeter very BRIGHT!

Canton 1DC (Stereophile raved about it)....I thought my ears were going to bleed.

Hans, thanks for your input on the B&W D series. If I ever change my amplification ways I'll have to make it a point to give these a listen.

Most components are different. Sound not comparable. Forget the D, go for the Diamond!

I've never heard a Wilson Audio speaker I liked. And I've heard most of them, big and small.

I never really warmed up to the Amati Furura, I've heard it multiple times with 4 different sets of amplification, never did much for me.

But, speakers are so personal, my dealer and good friend David just loved them !

I agree, except for the Duette,I thought it sounded very good. The Alexia is also a good speaker, once they went to the soft dome tweeter, their sound changed for the better!!
