Tribute to Mercury Records

Thanks, Myles. It's wonderful to see that Tom Fine has such a great knowledge of what his parents did. Not many of us can say that. Have you heard the vinyl reissues you pointed to yet. I think I have all of them in originals, but they were typically cut very close to the label. More space for the load climaxes but also more inner groove distortion. Records from that time tend to be pretty beat up. Both Classics Records and Speakers Corners have done reissues earlier.

No I haven't Larry and am curious like you; unfortunately I usually find the original release superior.

OTOH, if you don't have the original record or want something reasonably priced (though the price of early Mercury pressings save for one or two have markedly dropped)--or as you mentioned a copy with perfect surfaces--then these releases should be investigated. Not to mention that mono recordings of Church Windows is sensational (puts the RR performance to shame-not to mention the carillon at Riverside Church).
 
I have a few of the LPs from the first box set but haven't listened to them yet. If i'm reading between the lines these 'new' releases are from digital files created for the '90s RBCD release? that would mean these vinyl box sets are digitally sourced. I never cared for '90s RBCD releases that Wilma oversaw, they suffered from the same distortion I heard on the original vinyl pressings.

The speakers corners releases were excellent across the board and ended my desire to collect original pressings again, they covered most of the TAS list records. Hobson only did the sonic block busters like hi fi a la espanola, love for three oranges, rapsodie espagnole/la valse, the firebird and a few others.
