Transferring Ripped CDs From An External HD To Roon Nucleus

It would not be a network share... the drive is attached to the Nucleus directly through USB, not through the network. I am at work so I do not have it in front of me, but you should be able to browse (I can't remember what Roon calls it, sorry) and the external drive should be there. I think it would be Settings->Storage-> add a folder or location or whatever they call it :), there.

This is from Roon help forums:
"With external drives you need to map the drive.

Settings > Storage > Add Folder > Click on the drive you want to mount > Select the folder you want Roon to catalogue > ‘Select This Folder’

Hope this helps!"

And another:
"Just map the drive, on a Mac you will see it via finder as Rock or the IP address of the Rock server, on Windows 10 you will need to enable SMBv1 (Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off > check the box for “SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support”) then in Explorer/Finder you will see Rock, select it, then storage, then your disk, then to copy files just drag and drop."

If the external drive is not showing up it might very well be that 16' cable. That is very long for a USB cable.
 
@bluegrassphile, did you buy the Nucleus from a dealer? If you did so, your dealer might be able to assist you.
 
If the drive is attached properly and you go to Settings > Storage > Add Folder, then your drive should show up on that screen and you should be able to choose any folder from that drive.

If the external hard drive is connected directly to the Nucleus via USB cable, there is no need to map the drive.

Step-by-Step
1. Make sure the Nucleus and the external hard drive are turned off/disconnected from power.
2. Get SHORT USB cable (Type A one end; Type B other end)
3. Use USB cable to connect Nucleus and external drive to each other. (The Type B connector attaches to the Hard Drive)
4. Power Nucleus on.
5. Once Roon is running, go to Settings, Storage, Add Folder. The external hard drive should now be shown. Select the folder with your music.

Roon may take a while cross-indexing your library. But once that is done, you should be able to find and select your music with your iPad.

Yea, so in this example just choose testmusicfolder and click Select this folder.

Any Best Buy or other such store will have this cable. I literally throw them away at this point because every Dell monitor we get for our office come with one (two monitors per desktop, yada yada yada.... we are over loaded :) ).
 
It's working!!! It was the cable!! The new cable came a few minutes ago. It's the 16' cable with the different USB ends though. I'll start using the 10' one as soon as it arrives. Although the 16' cable seems to work OK.

Yes, we’ve been talking. He had some issues that first had to be resolved as Roon kept crashing.

I am very glad you got it working... that is awesome!

I doubt you would hear a difference between a 10' and a 16' USB cable. Unless you can move the external drive near your Nucleus and use a much shorter cable I would not worry about it. Just keep it however it is most convenient for you.

Knowing Mike, I had a sneaking suspicion that he was communicating trying to assist Bluegrass in the background.

Thank you, Peter. I appreciate your kind words. I'm well aware that I can be a nuisance at times, mostly because of my lack of basic computer and technical knowledge. But I'm learning. And these kinds of experiences help to further that. I still have a long way to go to be at the level of most people on The Audio Shark. I hate being a newb though.

Hey Tom,

We all have to start somewhere. When I jumped back into this crazy hobby after being away for quite some time I discovered that much had changed. The entire world of digital music really did not exist back then (CDs were out but they were considered awful in the high end audio world). I felt like a noob and had a lot of learning to do; I asked a lot of questions and felt rather un-educated at times. The one advantage I did have is that I worked in the technology field so I was not at all intimidated by computers and technology.

My feelings are do not ever feel that a question is not worth asking. I think you will find that many of us understand where you are coming from and will do our best to help.

I am glad you have been able to get your system working to your liking. Congratz and enjoy your music!
 
Wow! Been listening to my ripped CDs. The streamed music from Qobuz and Tidal sounds really good. But the ripped CDs sound wonderful. They sound just a little more robust and "energized." Maybe slightly more open. Not sure how to describe it. It's just.....gooder! :woot:
 
I love it.... gooder :D

If you ever have the chance to listen to DSD files through your system it will take you to an entire new world!
