NOTE: I posted about this subject a few days ago on WBF. No one there has responded, so I'm paraphrasing the text of my WBF post here.
I recently spoke with a Manhattan-based audio dealer who told me about light-dependent resistor (LDR) preamps. In theory, LDR preamps can offer more accurate volume attenuation than potentiometers and more precise volume attenuation than stepped attenuators, which tend to have relatively large "steps" between volume settings. A few megabuck models use LDR volume controls--the Constellation preamps and the Dartzeel--but this dealer told me he might start selling products from a small outfit called Tortuga Audio, which makes an affordable and fully passive LDR preamplifier:

I'm not a fan of the way this preamp looks, and I think the company's name is odd. (Good preamps should be responsive and fast, not slow like a tortoise.) But feedback on the sound of this company's products, from 6Moons and elsewhere, has been extremely positive. The price is right, too.
Have any members of the AS community had an opportunity to hear one of these?
