NOTE: I posted about this subject a few days ago on WBF. No one there has responded, so I'm paraphrasing the text of my WBF post here.

I recently spoke with a Manhattan-based audio dealer who told me about light-dependent resistor (LDR) preamps. In theory, LDR preamps can offer more accurate volume attenuation than potentiometers and more precise volume attenuation than stepped attenuators, which tend to have relatively large "steps" between volume settings. A few megabuck models use LDR volume controls--the Constellation preamps and the Dartzeel--but this dealer told me he might start selling products from a small outfit called Tortuga Audio, which makes an affordable and fully passive LDR preamplifier:

I'm not a fan of the way this preamp looks, and I think the company's name is odd. (Good preamps should be responsive and fast, not slow like a tortoise.) But feedback on the sound of this company's products, from 6Moons and elsewhere, has been extremely positive. The price is right, too.

Have any members of the AS community had an opportunity to hear one of these?

They have their own forum on Audio Circle. Members their have been raving about the preamps for a while. They are about 60 miles away from Mike. If I hadn't gotten such a great deal on the Wyred, I was going to try one. They sell the modules separately so you can build your own enclosures.

I second that.

Joe, have you found it to be a good match for the JOB?

It is but talk to Richard about voicing it with the speakers you are using.

If I hadn't found Richard , I would have gone with the stp-se from wyred

Richard mixes metals on the connectors to maintain detail or soften it. It's an amazing passive. I am very happy.

And Richard is a member here at A-Shark too! He runs a JOB 225 amp, Elac (Heil) speakers, Audenze HPs and Chord Dac.

I spoke with Richard last night. He's a very nice guy, and it sounds as though he has truly found ways to get more performance out of the Tortuga preamp boards.

Hey--just wanted to apologize. I just noticed that much of this ground was covered in a thread I started last October but forgot to check! My bad . . .

Not that more discussion about audio is a bad thing . . .

Tortuga has announced a V2 of their board that is quite a lot more advanced, including the ability to compensate for the ageing of LDRs etc. However, I checked with Morten and the V2 board will only be incorporated in their finished products sometime in the future.

Hi All,

The V2 will be part of our new line of LDRx/LDRxB (balanced) passive preamps that we're working hard to release by August 15th. More info available on our website at www dot tortugaaudio dot com

Cheers,
Morten
