"To Lampi or not to Lampi?....That is the question." by William Shake-it-up

Looking forward to hearing the Big 7 in my system Jerry - nudge, nudge, wink, wink! [emoji57]

Jerry, I'm glad you're enjoying the Lampi. I heard a Berkley DAC the other day and was quite impressed with it, I can't imagine what the Reference sounds like !

I have a solid two weeks of break-in / listening to my new Big 7 Lampizator dac now. It continues to improve everyday. At this point I can confidently say it's DSD playback is the best I've heard. The sound quality produced by the Lampi mimics the natural tone, sustain, timing, and flow of music I've heard in a live event. The soundstaging is excellent, displaying a wide and deep presentation. The bass is taunt and full. The midrange is a perfect blend of warmth and bite....not overblown. I have had other dacs flesh out a bit more detail and dymanics, but none were as natural sounding as the Lampi in my system. My best redbook playback is date is via my Berkeley Reference dac unit. The Lampi redbook is getting closer to the Berkeley, as it continues to break-in.
My Lumin S-1 fall a bit short when compared to Lampi's DSD, or Berkeley's redbook. But as I've said before, the Lumin is a great combo dac/streamer, that has an awesome user interface. The Lumin offers streaming and superb multi-format performance at very reasonable costs.
I must qualify my impressions by stating that my newly constructed listening room is currently a bit over-damped. So I am unable to judge the 5k to 20k frequency range of these dacs as well as I would like. So please take this issue into consideration, when considering my review. I will report more, if additional changes take place.

Jerry,

Thanks very much for the insightful review. It was very helpful.

Thanks - useful comparison. What are you using to drive the Big 7?

A Baetis Music server / Lampi Big 7 / Pass XP-20 Pre / Pass XS-150 Monos......connected with Stealth Audio cabling. I will soon try driving the XS-150 amps direct with the Lampi, as I got volume control built in.

I was reading tonight that you can tube roll in a SE Lampi Big 7, but the balanced Lampi Big 7, you cannot? Can someone clarify? Confusing. :panic:

Its somewhere on the Lampi Facebook page or the EU website - there is even a pix of the prototype 4-tube PCB.

101D tubes only, for now.

Mike,

When I was in the market for the Wavelength Crimson, I spoke with Gordon Rankin on the single-ended versus balanced version. He was very matter of fact that the single-ended Crimson sounded significantly better than the balanced version, as the single-ended used better sounding DHT's than the balanced version. This makes me wonder if the balanced Big 7 will measure up to their single-ended version, which is currently knocking it out of the park.

Best,
Ken

Agreed Ken. I'm wondering if it just doesn't create more angst and confusion in the market. I understand people WANTING balanced - I get that - but if the mission is building the best and singing the praises of tube rolling, this might be a step in the wrong direction.

But, I'm watching all of this from the sidelines anxiously awaiting Jerry to bring his Lampi over for me to hear. Jerry? Jerry, you there? Jerry? [emoji23]

Mike,

I agree with you. It will be interesting to see how it plays out with the balanced Big 7. However, what really interests me is Lampi's DSD conversion method. Are any other companies other than Lampi currently using this method? If Lampi's DSD conversion method is new breakthrough technology, I wonder if other manufacturers will also begin using it in their DACs. This makes me want to stick with my K-01 for awhile longer. I wouldn't want to upgrade to the K-01X only to find out next year that they had added Lampi's DSD conversion method to their player. Right now, DSD technology appear to be moving at the speed of light.

I'm curious as well Ken and I wonder how it compares to my new T+A PDP3000HV's "TrueDSD" 'technology or is T+A's TrueDSD something better yet again?

We may be worrying about nothing if MQA takes off!

Mike,

Things are moving so damned fast right now with digital audio and DSD, it feels risky to make a new purchase right now. I may stick with my K-01 for awhile to see how it all shakes out. But the Lampi has definitely piqued my interest.

Best,
Ken
