Three Must-Have Audio Accessories

What are the three best audio accessories currently being used in your system? Caveat. One must be under $100.

Here's my picks!

1. HiFi Tuning Record Clamp--Every time I try a clamp in my system, always find myself returning to the HFT record clamp. This wood and quartz based record clamp doesn't have the mechanical sound of the stock VPI (or other metal) clamp and an uncanny ability to layer and separate images within the soundstage as well as producing a realistic, palpable, wrap your hands around, three-dimensional image. This clamps also really brings out the midrange and harmonic envelope of different instruments and singers.

2. SRA Ohio Class XL+2/3.0 VR Series Isobase-Haven't tried all the contenders but the SRA base worked wonders under all the equipment, in particular, miracles under the GAT preamplifier and turntable. Under the GAT for instance, the VR Series base elevated the preamplifier to another level and added a 1/2 to whole star to its performance. The SRA base revealed dynamics never thought the GAT was capable of as well as precipitously reducing the noise floor of the preamplifier. And remember we're only talking about two tubes here. Under the turntable, the Ohio Class again reduces that noise floor, increases dynamics and in the case of the table, brings the low frequencies a large step toward what is experienced on the tape. (Someday would like to do an comparison between the SRA base and an active, air isolation base like a Herzan or even a passive isolation like the Minus-K!)

3. Kontak--Probably the least colored of the contact cleaners though could do without the preservative. Another product that just reduces the system's overall noise floor as well as--especially with power cords--especially that edge that tends to build over time (works even better with precleaning connectors with Flitz or solid Gorham silver polish paste). In fact, cleaning those AC connections should be at the top of everyone's regular system monthly or bimonthly tuneups!

Sheets of 1/2 inch thick Sorbothane cut into 2 inch squares (under $100)
Slabs of Granite for under speakers and amps ($15 to $30)
Lava Lamp ($20) makes all music sound better :)

Vinyl Record cleaner
HRS nimbus couplers/spacers footers
Q-tips - for cleaning ;)

1) Goat hair and carbon fiber brush
2) Magic Eraser
3) RCM with good cleaning fluids
Can I add a forth for fun? 4) Display for album or CD currently playing.

Ah, like this? I custom machined these back in my Toolmaker days

Nice one Brian. I have that same type of thing for my CDs, but did not make it myself. For LPs I use a dinner plate stand on my living room system and for my vintage system I use a plastic wall frame that I picked up for $9.

I only made 2 of them and tried to get my boss to do a simple run on the CNC mill and sell them thru a few local stores, but he wouldn't go for it.

The pictured DVD is a paper case and the slot was milled to perfectly fit a CD Jewel case at 15 degrees. I wish I had milled a second slot to fit DVDs now but they are many years old. I may still have the autocad dwg of the plan somewhere. I also tried to get a guy to make them out of exotic woods. He was a custom Bass builder and you just told him what woods and what you wanted it to look like and he whooped it up. It was called Acacia Basses owned by Matt Friedman.

You get the award for creativity! :) I need to dust my gear more often. It's amazing how much dust accumulates in one week on stuff in NY. Ughhhh....

You're boss missed the boat IMHO. That would have been a best seller! Like the original Mod Squad tiptoes were. Think of the profit. They sold around a million and a half tiptoes at a profit of around $3 or so in those days. Not too shabby.

I hear ya, I had an idea of around $15 and still able to make money if a good qty run was done on the CNC mill. I bet plenty of HE guys would shell out more for them in the right stores.

Hey, where is Machining Matt? Maybe he wants a little simple action.

Oh, hell yes Brian! Your boss missed a cruise ship on that one. Mine is black with the 15 degree angle and also is just narrow enough to not fit a DVD. (No worries about that though). It's wood, painted gloss black and has a little silver metal piece etched in black lettering on the front that says "Now Playing". I think I paid around $12 for it. I forgot where I got it. I want to say Tower Records (that's where I first saw them).
I totally agree, in the right shops you could have made a tidy little sum.

I don't have three accessories but what hasn't been mentioned is a SPL meter. A simple Radio Shack one does a good job.

Who was that fellow who was machine aluminum chassis', record clamps, etc. Was he here or on audioaficionado?
