There are amps, and there is...

Been listening all morning after having the amp on overnight. Man, this amp is INCREDIBLE! I would say it’s quite easily the best amp we’ve ever had in the store. Far better than the dry Swiss amps. And doesn’t get shrill at all when pushed like some other Euro amps.

Well, another ‘best ever’ amp-du-jour [emoji3].

Mike, you are rotating these things so quickly I can’t even remember all the names...

Huh? I’ve had the colosseum for almost 2 years and now it’s replaced by the Mephisto.

I was also counting other brands...

I have a store. Carrying multiple top brands is what we do. We have many great products at a variety of price points. I rarely proclaim “best”, so I don’t know what your point is.

I am just observing a bit of a sailor mentality in the love for VAC, Luxman, Gryphon, T+A etc. That’s all.

Of course it is different if you own a candy store [emoji3].

If they weren’t great, I wouldn’t carry them. And for the record, I said the Mephisto was the best SS amp we have had in the store.

Am pleased to hear that you love it. I seriously considered buying it but for budget and also space reasons settled on the Antileon Evo. All the reviews/feedback suggests that the Mephisto is the superior amp (as it should be given it is around 50% more expensive than the AE) although apparently the AE suits some tastes more because it is a bit 'warmer' than the Mephisto. Would love to hear the Mephisto some day. An awesome addition to your already impressive range of SS amps.

Mike do you still have the Gryphon Pantheon speakers there? I bet the sound would be “righteous “ with this Mephistopheles!.......... The Pantheons are impressive for the money and one of my faves in your shop.

I stopped by Mike’s store today and listened to the Mephisto for about an hour. First of, the amp is huge!

The system was an Aurender player, Aqua La Scala DAC, Gryphon Pre and Mephisto amp driving the B&W 800 D3s.

First of, I have never heard the 800s sound so good. The music presentation was very clear with no sense of brightness. There was a touch of sweetness but not too much. Very controlled bottom. Image was very good and a huge soundstage.

I heard these speakers at Mike’s in the same room a few weeks ago. Electronics were Luxman and they sounded very nice. However, for me, the Mephisto would be the amp to get - WOW!

How is the Mephisto doing today against the competition's similarly priced amps ?
Any Mephisto Evo coming out in the near future ?

The Mephisto and Boulder 2160 certainly are the two kings of the castle at Suncoast Audio. Both are world class, both offer different sounds. Both are huge and are clear statement amps. Of course, there are four MBL 9011’s tapping them on the shoulder. :)

Thanks Mike, i'm seriously considering the Mephisto stereo, i love it's live type of sound presentation.

Mike, how does each of those amps compare to the Pass Labs XS300, or XS150?

They don’t put out nearly as much heat! The XS300’s can run with any of them. The XS300 is literally a different beast compared to the XS150. But you need a LOT of floor space for XS amps and a 5 tonne AC!

I can only imagine the heat, Mike, and you are in Florida. I was not aware that the 300 sounds so different from the 150. I had thought they were quite similar sounding with just different amounts of power. Then again, I understand the XA200.5 sounds quite different from my XA160.5. Thanks.

I don’t wish to misdirect this thread in a wasteful way, but in reference to needing a large AC unit to handle the excess heat from large Class A amps, what has been the experience with trying to minimize the AC unit noise interference (other than moving the unit as far away as possible from the music room)?

If it’s modern, like variable speed and outside, you won’t hear a thing. Our new 5 tonne is whisper quiet even standing next to it. Inside, you can’t hear a thing.

Hi Cmarin, how do you like your Mephistos compared to your past amps ? are they really much better ?
I also would like to know what is the difference in parts between first gen Mephisto and the present version that came out around 2016 if i recall ?
Is there a difference in sound between fisrt gen and second gen ?
Thanks.
