The future of Tidal

I don't know about you guys, but I honestly think the $20 is actually too cheap, for the service and catalog provided. The amount of music in Tidal is just mind-blowing.

Five years from now $20 a month will look cheap if there are just a few players left standing.

Early in the 20th century in America there were literally hundreds of car manufacturers.

Easily 65% of my listening is via Tidal. As others have said, if Tidal were to go under, the impact would be crushing to me. Also as noted, there is no way for my Aurender (or most other network player/streaming devices) to play Deezer. I would be out of business as far as music streaming.

Network players would adapt to other solutions with software upgrades. That’s the beauty of those devices. They’re single purpose computers. And a computer’s software is easily upgraded.

I would happily pay double for Tidal compared to what I am at the moment. Hell, I fork out anywhere from 5-10k a year on music when I'm in the zone.

Have you tried Qobuz as I find the sound quality to be better and I am kind of non-impressed with MQA after listening though a Lumin and the Auralic variation.

In that chain I would be careful about which element of the sound I would attribute to which component.

In my summerhouse I do have an Aries Mini feeding an Ayre Codex and found that even though the signal is afterwards processed by the Codex, the end-result sounded too shrill when the Auralic’s filter was set to “detailed”. Changing the filter to “dynamic” made the sound much better.

I am aware of the filters and have tried them all since March of 2016. On standard 16/44 material Qobuz just sounds better to my ears on my systems and I have been a Tidal subscriber for far longer. Also you need to remember that Tidal is by nature an EU company and regardless of current "ownership" is still based there so your service is naturally going to be higher quality and more reliable for not having to travel across the Atlantic to be processed by what may be an inferior infrastructure.

But Qobuz is French, so the music travels the same journey. So I’m not sure how much this location argument really explains.

I have not heard Qobuz though and can hence not comment on its sound quality. Recent personal tests however show MQA with proper equipment sounds different to my ears - with still varying quality though.

I will agree with different on the sound of MQA. As to Tidal, the complaints about skipping and drop-outs are almost entirely from US customers. Qobuz has no equipment in the US at all at this point so what you hear is from the Euro servers as opposed to Tidal where the signal from Europe goes through US based gear. You would think that this would give Tidal the leg up but it appears to do the opposite. Just what I observe at my house and may not apply at yours.

No dropouts here when using Tidal via either Roon or Sooloos. If Qobuz was into Roon or possibly even Sooloos I would give it a try since it is not that makes it a nonstarter for me.

What they decide to do in those arenas could be subject to change once they launch here after the first of the year.

No tidal drop outs here (in the US), other than a couple weeks this summer. Software update seems to have solved that problem entirely.
