The Front End Digital Foundation

I don't think you will like it Ed, your to advanced for it. Your server and DAC have better usb components than the regenerator. Your Nyquist does not need the power over USB so the regen isn't doing much for you, Give it a few weeks before you comment, I bet it will change things. But I bet you will go back to direct connected.

Hi Kingrex, I'm not following your comments? The Uptone EtherRegen is an ethernet regenerator, but not usb. Are you thinking Ed is talking about the Uptone usb regenerator? The EtherRegen has only been beta tested to date, so there are no user reports until it ships in mid November.

I lied to myself saying I was done with Digital.

I will order UpTone Audio’s etherREGEN.

Puma Cat Stephen talked about this earlier, and I got a note from Uptone saying ready to order and now learned this batch of 250 is sold out and a second batch, I will be on the third series January receiving list - if they can only make one more as a Christmas present.

It will be interesting to see if the EtherRegen abrogates the advantages of high-end ethernet cables. The designer states there will be no need for anything beyond Beldon of Blue Jeans, ungrounded, cat 6. I'm sure this will be user tested!

I don’t use USB, and never needed to, I missed that phase of setup - and I think that’s a big part of why digital was not as good as it is now.

Click the link above.

etherGEN is a new ethernet switch built from the ground up and it will go before the Aurender.

Looking at this and speaking to Alex at UpTone, it’s worth a shot. aside from UpTone making things right with me on a past purchase that I never ended up using.

I don't know why I got USB and Ethernet mixed up in my head. I thought you were talking usb regeneration. But I still think you have darn nice gear. You have a Gigafoil with linear PS. LPS on all your ethernet and network equipment. I guess my knee jerk reaction is your putting more in the chain when the primary gear is already of the highest caliber and designed specifically to operate over Ethernet. Alex is a nice guy and makes good gear. I bet his switch will be great. I bet his new ethernet Regen will also be great, in the right application.

I’m a self proclaimed audio junkie and simply can’t do anything but higher(est) end cables [emoji22][emoji22][emoji22]

You got mixed up because we are reading and writing on a forum while doing other things.

It would go in place of the Gigafoil V4 and I would bump that before the DAC, and add back Roon to have two options.

My DAC is fed by AES from Aurender with excellent results.

And that my friend is why one can go crazy in this so called hobby!

I almost bought one. Then thought my switch has the same clocks and high end isolation and regulation. I want to hear what Ed thinks when he gets his.

You’ll get to hear it, but until it arrives sometime January, maybe December if they run ahead from what Alex said

My etherREGEN failed, I sent it back under warranty, it was returned within a week. In the interim the AQVox SE switch was moved in place, all was well. Upon receiving back the etherREGEN I put it on the home network for 50 hours before bringing it back into audio service. Last configuration it took over 100 hours to really hear the etherREGEN benefit.

Alex Crispi from UpTone suggested to feed the etherREGEN from the main switch versus how I had it set up prior. (If any one wants reference to earlier setup, I mention it in earlier write ups.)

The current configuration is as:

Modem > AQVox SE > etherREGEN > Gigafoil > Aurender N10

Audioquest Diamond RJ45’s are between all connections.

Nordost QKore passive grounding via RJ45 to AQVox SE switch and the Arris Surfboard 8200 Modem and by spade to the grounding lug on etherREGEN.

All digital gear other than the Aurender sits on an Adona platform that does real well for this setup, it’s tight but everything is on there - this isolation really does make a difference.

I am firmly in the camp of power and digital foundations, but I’m gloating right now on how good this really is at 50 hours on a cold start, and to think it’s a $600 switch, this is the icing on the cake on close to $30,000 in digital gear setup, that’s a statement!

But is the difference in sound quality the switch or how it’s being employed, much like when the sum of the parts tallies the whole. The big difference now is a .75M Audioquest Diamond connecting both switches where prior was a Ghent 45’ and with the shorter distance perhaps both switches clocks are in better support of one another, and stabilizing any high frequency noise/jitter is the passive chassis and circuit grounding from the QKore 6. Also etherREGEN has only one job now and that’s to pump the bits to the server, prior I used the 3 other ports to feedback to the homes Cat5, Apple TV and the RJ45 grounding port versus the now used chassis lug, it may of been to much demand or something, don’t know.

I’m hearing more now with, well more of everything and not in a glutten type manner, but in a more velvet smooth refinement, no glare, no edge.

Songs referenced:

Leonard Cohen - You Want it Darker
Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side
Madonna - Vogue
Holly Cole - Jersey Girl
Rodrigo Y Gabriela - Stairway to Heaven

The picture shows the modem, LPS and distribution resting on the Adona platform on top of a cabinet shelf on the entertainment center in the gym. Both switches are just behind the LPS and Modem. The Ethernet cables passes through the wall from the gym to the music room.

Hope this helps in some way, happy listening!

I'm glad to hear your getting your digital side back and performing as you expect. We all find ways to get this side up and running to our own expectations. And when something fails or we find a glitch. It can be time consuming and a challenge to get back on track. Sometimes it can be a simple as updating a firmware that screws thing up or fixes the digital side. Since most everything attached to this passion is centered around getting a electrical signal to work our system to its best performance. It can also cripple things.

from what i hear, way beyond etherregen etc, this is todays SOTA:

melco s100 (tuned by pink faun with ulta clock) with 2x farad3 ps

connected OPTICAL to

a second melco, same tuning and another 2x farrad3, add another ps for the modem and good ethernet cables

I’m sure that’s a good setup, but I’m done addressing my digital and circling tape!

My etherRegen died last week and a replacement is on the way. It worked fine ever since I got it but after some network rearrangement and moving the eR to a different room closer to the modem/router, it failed. When I connect supplied Meanwell smps, the green led would turn off. It looks like something sorted inside and I can smell burned electronics. I have no idea how this could happen and would like to get a RCA.

Do you know what happened to your etherRegen and what failed ?

No, and I asked twice.

I was told this never happens and now reading your experience.

My take is the heat has something to do with it - it gets very hot.

If it fails again, and hope it doesn’t cause it really has improved an already amazing sound, I’ll just reconfigure back to the AQVox as it’s no slouch and call it a day.
