Tell me about the Oppo players

I'd like to find a disc player (Oppo or otherwise) that will support Redbook, CD-R, SACD & DVD (without strict region code limitations like many Sony players). Ideally both the audio and video output would be as good or better than my current Sony DVP-NS999ES players but with better recognition of SACD and hybrid discs and it should play DVD's regardless of region-code. For video, my plasma screen does have HDMI inputs.

Budget is ideally under $1000.

How do the newer Oppo BDP-103 and 105 compare to say, the BDP-95 or older Oppo models?

Oppo 105D. Has more flexibility for using it as a DAC. If you were to upgrade it to a ModWright version, then you would be really laughing.

You may need a region-free to be able to play all DVD's and Blurays; several modders offer that, generally about $250, which restricts your choice to the 103 or 103D. From analog outs, it won't sound as good as a 95, for which you could also get a region-free mod (or there are plenty in the used market which already have that).

Would you care to elaborate (vs 105D? ) ? Thanks.

I have both the 95 and 105D. The 95 is a little more analog sounding, but it's close, very close....and given the added features of the 105D, I would still recommend it.

Truth be told, if you could find a Esoteric K-05 for a great price (used), that's the way I would go. We did an Oppo 95 vs K-05 shootout and it wasn't close.

What part of that second listing suggests it is under $1000??

Does the Esoteric play DVD?

Thanks Mike :)

vs. 103(D); I thought that was clear. Both the 105 and 105D are out of his desired price range.

You did , I was just curious to know your thought on 105D . Thanks.

I'm sure Mike was recommend the k-05 to me not to OP :)

I have a Modwright (solid state mod) 95 in my HT system as well as the modded 105 (in my signature) in my stereo system. I can sort of know what the stock 95 and 105 sound like by listening to the front L/R from the 5.1 outputs of each. The 95 also has the disadvantage of the fan which can be easily heard when it is on; you can minimize how often the fan turns on (especially if you aren't playing video) by removing the top cover.

Pretty sweet!

Thanks for the responses guys.

The Oppo BDP-95 is an attractive unit to me as the reviews I've read state that it's "quite analog" sounding compared to other Oppo models. In addition, it offers balanced outputs which would be handy. If I can find a ModWright modded BDP-95 or other unit (tube or SS mods) within my budget I'd gladly go that route too.

rbbert, you mention the fan noise with the BDP-95. Damnit! I was all set on the 95 until I read your note. How bad is it? I might be able to shuffle gear around to place the Oppo on a lower shelf with the lid off, but that wouldn't be ideal I don't think.

Some people don't seem to be bothered by the fan noise, but I certainly am. I have had 2 BDP-95's, and they were similar in this respect. As I said, though, just playing music, with no cover on the second shelf of a rack, the fan hardly ever turns on. Playing a Bluray video, it will, but I find it less objectionable in that setting. If you're really thinking of the Modwright tube mod I would go with one of the 105's, unless you can replace the stock fan with something less noisy (as some handy owners have done), because I think the fan will run more due to the extra heat from the tubes.

One thing about the Modwright, you supply the OPPO and $2500.00 and you get back one heck of a player..

I have an Oppo BDP-95 and I have never heard the fan come on. It either isn't working or I am lucky to get one that is very quiet. For redbook cd I use an old Stax Quattro II cdp. It sounds warmer than the Oppo and still detailed. The only negative is it is not as forgiving of less than perfect cd's in terms of skipping. I guess the laser might be getting weak in a 30 year old player. I luckily found a second one as a back up (they are kind of scarce). As an all-in-one player the Oppo is hard to beat. The Modwright upgrade sounds interesting.

Understood. Hence likely out of my budget unless I can luck into a used deal.

Good to hear that Albert. The more reading I do on the BDP-95 it seems some fans are noisier than others.

I would assume the fan is controlled such that it spins as fast as it needs to (up or down in speed) depending on temperature sensed. I wonder if a lower CFM fan could be installed to quell some of the noise such that at max spinning speed it would be quieter yet still do it's job, or if that would compromise the cooling performance too much? I'd hate to Mike-re-engineer something and then cause damage due to overheating in the end.
