Speaker auditioning

Many loyal fans on Audio Circle where Lou has his own forum. Strong connection with the guys at Modwright. Very few come up for sale used unless the owner is moving up the line. And you are right like Jim Salk, Lou makes top-line enclosures.

as I have continued my auditioning journey I have grown and become quite 'smitten' with Revel, to the point I think I will be pulling the trigger on a pair of Studio 2's very soon.

Any Revel owners here ?

Man... Revel and Daedalus couldn't be more opposite from one another. That said, there are plenty of Revel owners here who I'm sure would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about their gear.

interesting, with that being said, I'm glad I'm leaning towards Revel !

Dave, I'll share my little speaker journey. About 5 yrs. ago I was looking to upgrade from my PSB Synchrony 1's. The PSB's were so good at their price point that I was having a hard time finding better. Initially I had dismissed listening to the Revel Ultima series because I couldn't wrap my head around all those metal drivers. But I kept reading review after review raving about them, so I went to a dealer and listened for myself.
The demo completely took me by surprise, I told the dealer to order me a pair right then.

I ended up becoming very good friends with my dealer,David Baskin, until he passed away. After that, I became enamored with the Raidho brand of speakers and ended up ordering a pair of Raidho D3 v2's. I absolutely loved them, at least on 80% of my music. But the Raidhos have a mid-bass hump that started to make me crazy. On bass heavy music, and at loud volumes, it finally was too much. So I sold them.

Then after hearing the Dali Epicon 8's, I ordered a pair of them. They sounded fantastic, but for some reason they bothered my tinnitus in my right ear. It wasn't anything I could hear, so I was confused what the problem was. So even though I really loved their sound, they had to go.

So I called David and ordered another pair of Salon 2's. I've been thrilled with them every day since. The Salon 2's have maybe the best tweeter in the world, it's so sweet, but still gives everything a tweeter should. Combine the Hegel H30 with the Salons and you get magic.

Joe had Studios combined with Conrad Johnson and said it was maybe the best system he's ever owned.

I don't see how you can go wrong with Revel, especially when paired with the right electronics.

Mark,

Thanks for the insight ! I've been a planar / dipole guy for over thirty years (Maggies and Logan's) the Revel Ultima series is the first 'box' speaker (within my budget) that has made me want to leave the 'planar world' ........ I ordered my Studio 2's yesterday.

FWIW, my upstream electronics include ARC LS-27, Rogue Audio M-180 monoblocks, Plinius SA-102.

source - analog --- VPI Aries III, Fosgate signature phono-pre
digital ---- Cary 306 SACD

Dave...congrats on the Studio 2s:thumbsup: Let us know how the Revels sound with the Rogue's tube 180wpc vs the Plinius' 125wpc class A/B (?wpc in Class A). Do you listen to the Plinius in Class A/B or Class A? If Class A, do you know what power it puts into 8ohms?

hi Cyril,

With respect to my Plinius, it's my amp of choice in the summer months and with that being said I only bias into all class A when 'serious' listening is being done. Power is the same (125w 8ohm) whether A or A/B, it doubles down.

I'll report back once I've got the Revels up and running

Cool. Looking forward to your impressions with both amps. Enjoy it in good health.

Dave, congrats on the Studio 2's. When do you get them?

Dave - Congrats on the Studios. Like Mark (MDP), I have owned the Salon 2s. This line within the Revel portfolio is outstanding. When are you expecting them?

Mike , I'll get them by months end. I'll be sure to post my impressions after living in the 'di-pole' world for over thirty years !

Dave, what I found when I went back to conventional was that I missed the panels for the only traits a panel can bring to the sound. But with careful selection of components & accessories, reading Jim Smiths book countless times & trial & error, I don't miss the panels any more. Congrats on the new speakers, what a great feeling it is.
