The little Sound Liaison label has issued all their albums in DSD and has a 25% discount until the end of the year.

They have apparently decided to make new masters especially for the DSD format.
I quote from the newsletter they posted:

We transfer the PCM files via an analogue signal chain, using the best possible outboard gear to create a new DSD master file, and in so doing, embellish the unique qualities of DSD.

Their PCM/WAV downloads sounds fantastic any opinions on their DSD's?

Thank you for posting, Mas. The Old Man and the Sea has been on my list to download. Looks like a good time to get it now!

thx

But they are not true DSD files. These are some converted PCM recordings that are ???? ( according to one review 24/96) that in the end have a few more zeros and help in error correction as I understand. Yes, even RBCD converted to DSD sounds better but one is deluding themselves if they think they are really listening to DSD. YMMV....

And AJ no that is not the difference I hears in converted files.

But at least they have created a new master especially for the DSD medium, instead of just during a straight digital transfer.
So then it all comes down to preferences DSD or WAV/PCM.
But they have a sampler so one can compare the difference;

(I need to get a new Headphoneamp/DAC in order to play them....suggestions?)

Actually many have over the years transferred a digital recording to tape before release. It's kinda like putting lipstick on a pig. :(

That's a tough combination. The only one box solution I'm aware of within that budget that will drive the HD800s, is the iFi Micro iDSD.

cheers,

AJ

Thanks a million!
What is the ideal output for a 300ohm Headphone?
Depends on the sensitivity and how loud you desire :)
With its variable output modes, that unit should drive any phone, including yours.

cheers,

AJ

Thanks a lot AJ,
you have been most helpful:congrats:.

from the Sound Liaison website:
Our original idea was to only provide one to one copies of the original studio masters.
But we have had a number of requests to provide DSD downloads of our recordings.
We have been consulting various experts as well as conducting our own experiments on how to transfer our recordings to DSD.
What we finally arrived upon was that, in order to make full use of the sonic qualities of DSD, we would need to create new masters especially for the DSD medium.
After a full year of trial and error we finally found, what we believe, is the ultimate DSD conversion method. We transfer the PCM files via an analogue signal chain, using the best possible outboard gear to create a new DSD master file, and in so doing, embellish the unique qualities of DSD.

So just to clarify; Our DSD masters are not original studio masters.
We record in PCM, so if you want a native one to one copy of the original studio master, without any kind of conversion, choose the PCM download.

source; DSD

Thanks. How does that disprove what I said? You are already starting with a low Rez source. The one thing as I understand from some techies, you may be doing by transferring to DSD is improving error correction. FWIW I can take RBCD and transfer it to quad DSD and improve the sound. But it's still not real DSD.

They have one now;

With one exception, Impromtu (Tony Overwater & Bert van den Brink), was recorded direct to PCM and direct to DSD with two seperate recorders.

But is 2 inch tape considered a hi-res source compared to 24,96 pcm?

I recently purchased "Impromptu" and find both the musical content and mastering quality to be exceptional. Nice that they recorded this live performance directly in PCM as well as DSD, so that you can get whichever format is best suited to your system without having been through any digital conversions. I also have to commend the support from Frans de Rond at Sound Liaison, he responded promptly to my email and was very helpful. Highly recommended, we need more recordings of such superb quality!

I had the same experience. Quite exceptional.

bthw the introduction offer is now this one, and here Frans de Rond is having a more active role than just recording, it says ;
Joshua Samson - PANArt hang & Percussion
Andre Heuvelman - Trumpet & Flugelhorn
Frans de Rond - Interactive Recording & Electronics

Hoes300shadow.jpg
The musical setup was to have the sounds that Joshua extracted from his hangs inspire and trigger musical answers from Andre's trumpet and Frans' subtle improvised sound scapes which again would course Joshua to answer. Each musician tried to only play when his inner ear or spiritual ear demanded a reaction.

The order in which the pieces of music has been organised follows Joshuas own rules of chakra's and tonality. A system he has arrived at after a long and dedicated study of etnic and spiritual music.
So this music was actually created with a certain purpose, but as with all true art, the way it should be experienced is completely up to the user.
