I was lucky enough to pick up someone's Lumin S1 trade-in from Play It Again this past week and it arrived today - another gorgeous looking piece of gear to the collection!
It has been intended for my office system since I have spent so much more time in there working at home over the past month. I had my Uniti Atom in there along with my Heresy III and JL sub, but nostalgia and love for warm and glowing things has led me to wire up my Luxman MQ-88uSE and CL-40 instead. The missing piece of the puzzle was a streaming source and DAC - I have been making do with a Chromecast Audio running optical into an Ayre Codex DAC via Roon. Which has been perfectly fine - exceptional in fact for background music and occasional breaks from work.
The S1 was too good a deal to pass up and I have always heard good things about Lumin and their quality and simplicity working with Roon etc.
I got it into the office this afternoon and the hour or so I have spent with it was "okay." Running straight out of Roon with no DSD upsampling, it was a bit more refined than the CCA/Ayre Codex combo. Upsampling in Roon to DSD128 did separate the S1 quite a bit but that glimpse of quality made me believe that perhaps the vintage CL40 and Heresy IIIs are holding back the S1's true capabilities.
So this evening I'm thinking I may try it into the analog inputs of my Uniti Nova in the main system and see if the Naim amp and Rival speakers give the S1 a better showcase.
Either way I am really happy with it. If it blows away the streamer in the Naim then great - I'll use the CCA/Codex in the office Luxman system and be happy. If the Nova streamer continues to have the edge then I'm more than happy replacing the S1 into the office system where it will also sound exceptional.
Anyway, interested in hearing any tips or hacks with the S1 that may be worth trying out? I am pretty committed to the Roon platform unless there's a huge sound difference by streaming direct from the Lumin app. I've already been using a Transparent High Performance power cord with the S1 as well as 3 IsoAcoustic Indigos.
