Silver or copper? What have you ended up preferring?

It seems like every cable line has both metals with silver usually being the most exotic or expensive.
Has it been for you just trial and error and depending on your components what you ended up with, with one metal an overwhelming choice?
I only have copper xlrs, copper speaker cables and a pair of silver SE interconnects which I have not ever compared to others. Ignorance is bliss sometimes. And CHEAPER!

I tend to prefer copper cables as they sound more natural to my ears than silver, silver plated, or silver/gold cables. I've found a happy home with Jorma Design, but there are other nice cables. It's also system-dependent. Also to some extent, a mix and match approach can work well.

I guess silver since I'm a Siltech fan (which is silver and gold).

Also both, current loom is WyWires Platinum (copper) and I like them. Have also had the Acoustic Zen Silver Reference II interconnects (silver). Just swopped USB cable to Curious, which is silver.

Do you just order blindly and hope they sound good with your particular system?
In testing the Dave compared to the Yggdrasil i discovered my silver SE cables were horrible compared to my XLR copper. I could make either Dac the looser by swapping them around.
My Eddie Current HP amp is what I have the SE cables for and they sound great I thought with it.
You think it might be just the implementation of the SE terminations in both Dacs or is Balanced just that much superior?

Hi David,

I have always felt this way too after many years of listening. But very recently I changed my mind and bought silver interconnects and speaker cables, which is something I thought I would never do. What changed my mind was an audition of Audioquest's Wild Blue Yonder cables. I don't know how the heck they did it but these cables are so neutral with zero edginess in the treble and upper midrange and are wonderfully musical too. They also deliver all the detail and nuance of silver wire. They are truly amazing. The Audioquest Fire cables are terrific too and bring you close to their performance for a lot less money. I guess never say never. :)

I have heard the Jorma's and they are wonderful sounding cables too.

Best,
Ken

Always listen to cables in your system before buying without a 100% return policy!

Agree, I also buy from people I trust as a result from their recommendation. With the Siltech I bought one pair of single ended first, now, it's no contest as it's the sound that makes me breathe.

I hate to hear that! I happen to be aquainted with a Siltech dealer nearby and he is psychic.

Dguitarnut.......I have been through some cables over the years. Way back when, there was the proverbial Monster cables, then came Mogami cables, Cable Solution Canare cables, then Cardas, Kimber, Tributaries, and now Wireworld. It wasn't until I used the Tributaries Silver series interconnects that I entered the realm of silver plated copper cables. That was a turning point where I recognized a welcomed improvement in upper midrange clarity. It was also the first time I was committed to all of my interconnects being from the same manufacturer and of the same type cables. I enjoyed the Tributaries Silver Series cables and felt they represented a great ratio of cost versus performance. I still use the Tributaries Silver Series cables in my home theater setup.

I have now moved to a full cable loom of Wireworld in the studio system, including power cords. I use the Silver Eclipse balanced interconnects, Silver Eclipse Speaker cables, Silver Electra power cords, and Silver Starlight digital cables. This level of Wireworld cable encompasses silver plated OCC copper combined with Wireworld's patented cable configuration. When I originally compared Wireworld cable to Tributaries Silver Series I was impressed with an overall improvement from bass texture, midrange resolution, air around instruments and voices, and a refreshing clarity to the upper frequency range, all without any glare. My initial experimentation comparing Wireworld to Tributaries ultimately led to a complete redo of my studio cabling. Once complete in the studio I did the same thing for my living room system with quite similar performance advantages. The living room system is cabled in Wireworld Silver Eclipse balanced interconnects, Silver Electra power cords, and Silver Starlight digital cable. The only exception is my living room speaker cables which remain Kimber 8TC. This is because my speaker cable runs are 38' each, going up inside the walls, across the attic, then down walls to the speaker locations. The length of the wire runs made the cost of Silver Eclipse speaker cable prohibitive, plus the physical size and shape of the Silver Eclipse speaker cable would have made it nearly impossible to run in the walls to the attic and back down where the speakers are located.

My experience in my systems has proven to my ears that copper can be very good but silver plated OCC copper offers improved resolution. I haven't changed a single cable in these two systems in over five years.

You all may have saved me a decade of cable experimentation! Now I have a direction to go in. :scholar: New cable 101 graduate!
Thank you so much for all the input! Now I just have to see what fits my budget!

You're welcome! Probably the most important piece of advice on this thread is Post #10. It will save you the most frustration and dollars.

Best of Luck,
Ken

+ 1. Good advice. Dguitarnut, from my experience cables which have good synergy with Magico include Siltech, Jorma Design and Kubala Sosna. Though there are many other cables I haven't tried which could work well also. As Jock said, there is no substitute to trying a set of cables in your system. I believe The Cable Company allow you to return cables after a home audition, and they carry Siltech and Jorma (though not all models).

I think like others have said it's all about total system synergy. I started with all OFC copper (warm sounding) but later switched to silver plated copper (Nordost) original Frey Sc's and Tyr2 Ic's (more detail and liquid sounding without being bright or edgy). Now I'm back to all copper (Ansuz). Same detail and tonality as the Nordost but with a more 'open' sound with greater depth and a slightly blacker background. I don't get it but I don't care because that's what I like. Now in all cases I've had extensive in home demos which I can't recommend enough. Besides total system synergy it's what you want and expect from your system.

What's great about a thread like this is you will all different opinions of what they prefer BUT it gives you some ideas of different directions to try.
