Shipping Audio Equipment....Keeping Them Honest

Re: My Spatial Statements have shipped!

The interesting is this: The photos that the manufacturer sent to FedEx showed that the box was undamaged but despite this, the casing was really bent. I was worried that FedEx might claim that the package was damaged prior to my having boxed it, but apparently that did not happen.

Since that time when unpacking an item. Without interrupting the filming sequence, I film the whole process from beginning to end. I film every surface, edge and corner of the unopened box; I film the whole process of opening the box and removing the item; and I finish by thoroughly filming the product from every possible angle once I have taken it out of the box.

I have not had to send anything off since then, but believe me, if and when I do, I intend to film the whole packing sequence just as thoroughly.

Oh! So that's why I sometimes run across "unpacking videos" on the interwebs?? I thought it was just new owner pride (nothing wrong with that either). I never thought of that, but you have a very good idea there.

In come cases it may be pride of ownership, perhaps. But in my case it's the will to survive! :D It pushes us to new creative limits.

I also photograph the unpacking process step by step from the front porch on for the same reasons. Especially important with UPS and USPS.

If you have insurance, USPS will pay off. In the not too distant past I bought an LP from a guy in England. It was in an envelope that clearly stated it was an LP and had a big Fragile sticker across the front. My genius mailman folded the record in half and shoved it in my mailbox. The Post Master admitted the carrier was an idiot, but because the LP wasn't insured, I was screwed.

Yes, I think it's a good idea now that I've had revelation on it. Next time it's my turn (whenever that will be) I'm going to consider doing just that. I almost feel like I've been very lucky so far.

Yes, most carriers including UPS and Fed-Ex can't read apparently. In fact, it is said that if you mark a UPS package as fragile, it gets kicked around more for fun. I've seen stuff come in marked "Do Not Crush", "Fragile", etc that looked like it had been dropped from 3 stories and run over and the contents inside has been damaged from time to time.
Then they want to increase rates for this from time to time.

I video & photograph everything that lands nowadays. It's just the way of the world. The FEDEX guys know that the are being recorded at delivery. I receive the shipment full knowing that I DO get compensated in FULL for any damage incurred by respective shipping parties. Most often they end up not wanting the salvage. Pitney Bowes have the highest incident rate from my experience.

1) A friend works for FedEx claims. She freely admits their first response is almost always, "deny."

2) Bought a tube pre that was shipped FedEx. They broke all the tubes somehow. They paid without hassle. Extremely rare occurrence.

3) Had a 90-lb. stereo amp shipped from California to Maryland via UPS in UPS-supplied packaging. Arrived with no damage. Sold the amp a few months later shipped to Canada via UPS in same packaging. UPS managed to bend one of the heat sinks. Had of have been dropped off the truck at minimum. Denied claim despite meticulous photos and UPS-supplied packaging!

4) Shipped Martin Logan Vantages from Maryland to Mississippi via UPS. Took a video of the boxing in original packaging and made sure it was date-stamped. Arranged for FedEx pick up. Driver was about to lay them on their sides in the truck before I pointed out to him the very large and bold words on the boxes that read "FRAGILE" and "THIS WAY UP ONLY." They arrived with no damage.

5) After the UPS experience with the amps, I'm videoing all expensive items while boxing them.
