Guys,

Maybe it's me and I am not getting it but I just listened on Spotify to Shelby Lynne's Just a Little Lovin' which is supposed to be this great audiophile album that everyone has raved about in all the mags and is played constantly at audio shows, and apart from being a better recording than many of the covers she does of Dusty Springfield's songs, musically I find it boring and, even though I don't listen to Dusty Springfield's music much, I just put on Dusty in Memphis, and from a music standpoint, ten times out of ten, I will chose the original Dusty songs over Shelby Lynne's covers in Just a Little Lovin'.

Am I missing something. The Shelby renditions are boring, the arrangements are meandering and take themselves too seriously and just put me to sleep boring. The Dusty originals are scored with big band arrangements, have wider dynamic envelopes, are faster paced generally-speaking and just generally more engaging.

Don't get what all the fuss is about.

I have to agree. I was checking her out and her voice is ok indeed, but rather limited. Even keeping in mind that these are "her" renditions of the songs and allowing for that room (we have to allow for that), I did find the album I was listening to = Just A Little Lovin, sounded almost monotone to me.
I tend to steer away from audiophile recommended artists and recordings anyway because I have been disappointed many times. The artists are usually not my cup of tea often as well. There are a few though that I find enjoyable and I'm sure as time goes on I will chance upon more I may enjoy.

Shelby's sister, Allison Moorer, is the far superior artist she just was never in-tune with the Record Company management.

I have to disagree Cyril. I am a Shelby Lynne fan. I go hear live music on a regular basis and I see Shelby in small clubs every chance I get. IMO, some of her shows have been the best concerts I've seen in the last ten years. I will say I think it is easier to appreciate what she does once you've seen her perform live.

+1
Is a matter of taste, I think
I like better her version

Guys...of course it's a matter of taste. I am just sharing my opinion/taste. I just find her arrangements very dull on that specific album as compared to the original songs from Dusty. She does have a very nice voice. But that's not what I was commenting on. In any case, It's all good.

While Shelby may be great live, to me here best recorded works are from her "Texas Swing" days of the early 90's. Specifically "Temptation" and "Restless." A lot of the rest of her stuff after "I am Shelby Lynne", has been spotty at best. While Shelby is great when she wants to be, her sister has always been more consistent.

Some of it; certainly not all.

* Shelby has few great tunes, but many bad ones. IMO

As for the quality of her recordings; nothing exceptional here, except for the natural emotion of the moment (of when it was recorded; nothing beats the emotional freedom of live).

That's what I love it here, everybody respect each opinion.
Best friendly forum in the web!!!
And now that I put it again to confirm what you saying, looks like she is making too much effort to sound good like oldies and maybe that's the problem

It is all good, Cyril. That's a great thing about music….it can touch us all in different ways.

Or others, If you haven't listened to Shelby's stuff prior to "I am Shelby Lynne" it would be worth your while. Yes we all have our own opinions on all things music related. It's just my opinion that if Shelby with the superior voice had Allison's writing skills or would have recorded some of her sisters songs her career would have been more even.

Bob

I don't know what you mean by "her good stuff", but if you mean the last 10 years you haven't. Have you ever listened to the sister?

The stuff I like. ...Both sisters, yes Jack.

Some stuff you like more than other? ...Older stuff from both sis, please share what you got; I'm interested to hear.

* I'm sure Cyril is interested as well. And everyone else. In all aspects of their entire careers, Shelby and Allison, the quality of their recordings (studio and live), the lyrics, and all that jazz.
You are a fan, obviously, of both sisters, like we all are, more or less.

Everybody like 'Dusty Springfield'.
...Which LP version, which CD version, master tape? Cyril, anyone?

Bob

Did I miss something. Are Bob and Van related? I do like Van, but Bob I never got and don't think I ever will. Do you want me to give you a disc listing? I go back with both sisters to the early 90's.

Jack, I have heard her earlier stuff, but I will go back and listen again. I do love the I Am Shelby Lynne album.
