S5v2 in the house

Bud, congratulations on being among the lucky few to own these tremendous speakers! Thanks for posting the photos btw...I can see why you chose Rose M-cast finish. It looks surprisingly good & matches your room well. Good show :cool:.
 
Thanks David. Good eye on the color. My bronze S5s were sounding great, but the color was a bit off after remodeling the house. Mcast Rose fits right in, and sounds better too. Win-win. :)
 
Just a follow up on these bad boys. They are now a week old, and except for 12 hours Tuesday they have been playing since 2PM last Friday. The music has been rotated between rock, jazz, and classical. Jazz (Patricia Barber, Holey Cole, Diana Krall, etc.) is what plays all night. Classical is during the week at night before bed, and during the day if I am home. Rock is Friday and Saturday night, all night.

Anyway, they have broken in quite well. While they might improve over time, I suspect they are 96.73% of the way there. They are exceptional with everything, but well recorded jazz is outstanding. Very clean, clear, articulate bass, and amazing detail in the mid range. I am constantly going, 'I never heard that before.' While I have nothing but praise for my S5 v1, this new version is a big improvement.

So, maybe it is time for the M3. :)

How good is the S5 Mk2's sound staging and imaging in your room Bud?
 
I think you have reached the point where they sound better than the S5 mk 1 and you are happy. But trust me - there is more to come ! One day in 4-6 weeks they will take you by surprise - you will realise how utterly spectacular they sound.
 
Well, I have lost track of the hours on them. I play them constantly while at home, even if watching a movie in the HT. While I did the first week, I don't let them play all night now. One thing I noticed yesterday while playing string quartet classical is that an edge on the highs isn't there anymore. It's as if the tweeter loosened up a tad (technical term). This was more a case of of noticing something missing than it standing out in the first place.

Other than that they just continue to sound fantastic. At this point, any improvements are subtle, but I am sure they will add up and one night I will sit up and notice a big difference.

Wednesday I am sending my HT Triton v2 in for the v3 upgrade, and I hope to have it back by next weekend. When it arrives it will replace the stereo Triton v2, and I expect that, along with the speakers, to show a big improvement in sound.

While I do love my S5 v1 speakers, the S5 v2 passed them after about 8 hours of break-in. There is much more detail in the music, and I am constantly sitting up and thinking 'I don't remember hearing that before.' The bass is much more precise and defined. I had to remove the pictures and clock from the wall in my office (room behind rack), since they now vibrate and buzz when music is playing. LOL.

These speakers are just fantastic, and I am really loving them. They seem to better every week. However, to be honest, I am also getting a bit paranoid. My previous S5s also sounded great, and when I boxed them up they were sounding their best. However, before they got to that point I had three mid ranges and a tweeter replaced, and a X-over repaired. While I only had to pay for two mid ranges and the tweeter, that experience has left me gun shy. Mainly because boxing them up and then unboxing them along with setting them up was both expensive, and a pain in the butt. Even now that experience is costing me money. LOL.

Anyway, now every time I turn the stereo on the first thing I do is make sure each speaker works. While the loudest the new S5 MKII have gone is high 80s db, I just can't bring myself to accept that is okay. Oh well, as long as they keep working I guess I will calm down. :)

Hi Bud, I know where you're coming from. I remember how freaked out I was when I was re-arranging cables behind my rack & accidentally caused an arc which blew the fuses in my Vitus cd player. Not being a techy, I was paranoid I might have caused some other damage to the player. So I brought it into my high end Audio Engineer for inspection. Fortunately the fuses did their job. The 'burnt' smell I was concerned about was just some carbon residue on the contacts from the arc. Once the fuses were replaced, the player tested and played perfectly.

I think when you've had to do the hard yards to build your high end system like we have, it's natural to fret over any past dramas. But you just have to put it behind you and trust that you've got some of the best loudspeakers in the world. Magico's engineering, testing and quality control are SOTA as we know. I kept my first pair of full size loudspeakers for 18 years and they never skipped a beat. And they were $2k speakers, and 1991 technology. The S5 Mk2's are orders of magnitude better ;).
 
Not sure what happened between last night and tonight, but the sound is a touch better now. The bass is thumping clearly and cleanly, and the detail in the mid area is even more revealing. Songs are coming on and I am going 'What is that?' LOL. I love it when these experiences occur.

I suspect the speakers are adjusting to their new home, but the same thing can be said of my two week old Triton v3. Whatever is responsible, the end result is a big 10/4 good buddy. :)

Seriously though, great to hear your magnificent S5 mk2's are starting to show their magic. You dream of speakers capable of giving you those 'wow' moments & sending tingles down your spine. And now you get to re-discover your music collection all over again which is fun! Your new power conditioner can probably claim a bit of the credit, having gone through the initial burn-in process.

Having gone from the S5 Mk1 to the Mk2, do you think the Mk2 sounds more coherent overall, or too early to judge? And in saying that, i'm comparing them to very coherent speakers like Avalon Eidolon Diamond or the latest Marten Coltranes which employ Cell concept drivers & 1st order x-overs. Also great to hear the bass is improving in terms of both quality and quantity :cool:.

David, I have preferred the MKII since I first turned them on. They have just gotten better over time, and I have lost track of that.

Have you hooked up your S5 MKIIs yet? If not then you have more patience than the Dali Lama. :)

No not yet Bud. To be honest it's not a question of patience. I've had a very tough year with work issues, and my Mum was recently moved into palliative care, so my mind has been on other things. But i'll get there..
