S5s in for audition

I love voodoo !!

It just shouldn't work. It really shouldn't work. Drives me bonkers.

I still can't believe I bought cable risers, let alone stillpoints and probably these Synergistic Research gizmos.

Darn voodoo.

So MY S5s were finally installed Monday. Color is Pewter in the MCast finish.

They sound so different than the demo pair I had been living with over the last couple of months. More air, more depth, tight taught textured bass but everything's just a tad less "musical." They sound HiFi. I've been playing them non-stop and will post in a few weeks. It's not that they sound bad, they sound great, but I'm wondering why there's a difference in sound between these and my demo pair. Hopefully it's just the break-in. Time will tell.

Michael, after spending a lot of time at David's place , I can assure you that break in is huge with the S5's. Don't panic until you're at about 800 hours or more.

800 hours!!! wow!!!

congrats michael, best of luck with them.

1000 hours to be broken in 80-85%. 5000 hours to be 100% broken in. That's what I've heard.

That's 208 days if they're playing music non-stop!!! Almost 7 months!

Given that most normal folks wouldn't play music 24/7 for that long, they'll probably never fully break in before you're on to something else - or dead. LOL

My gear barely gets to room temperature before its gone.

It's gotta be the break-in. Don't worry.

Thanks. I'm almost positive that that's the cause as well. The only differences I can find are the tweeter mesh (not on the newer S5s) and binding posts, all parts are spec'd the same.

Now that's the truth! :P

Hi Mike, I have the exact pair of S5s you have. Funny you mention they sound "Hi-Fi". I had the same feeling at first. I only have about 200 hours on mine, but they are starting to mellow out a bit. Smoother and fuller. I live in a NYC co-op and have already received two written noise complaints so I don't have the luxury of running them 24/7. Maybe 20 hours per week. I figure by 2017,I'll be good. Keep us posted!

Nice to know I'm not imagining things. Just found it odd that, in some respects, out of the box they had some improvements over my demo pair. This would mean it loses some dimensionality, air and bass detail as it breaks in in exchange for some lushness and a more enveloping sound.

We'll check back with you in 2017. TTFN!

It took about 200 hours for my S5 to settle in. I don’t know where people get the numbers they get, but I will suspect that the superb resolution of these allow you to hear every little changes, including temperature, humidity and power quality. Some may contribute the changes to speaker break-in, but I seriously doubt that.
I can swear that every time our refrigerator compressor kicks in, the sound deteriorate. I have never notice it before with any other speakers I had.

True

and Welcome to AS!
