S3 Review

It was "Created on Tuesday, 01 July 2014 00:00" by Ryan Coleman. Jeff Fritz mentioned on another forum that the review was in proofreading stage and not meant for publication yet.

Read it before it was taken offline. Very positive and "Reviewer's Choice" but no comparison done with other Magico models or competitors within similar price points.

When it is eventually published, one would hope that Jeff Fritz would chime in with a second opinion for completeness sake. It would be useful given that he has reviewed or listened to most, if not all, of the Magico range and would therefore be able to give a perspective of how the S3 stacks against the other Magico models. Plus, it is supposedly the "sweet spot" in the Magico.

Further, he has had experience with competitors of similar price points, like the Rockport Atria/Avior. So, a comparison with such competitors would enhance the usefulness of the review
.

We'll see on 1 July...

Summary:

"Some will say that Magico speakers don’t have a soul, as if that’s a criticism. I agree: Magicos do what the upstream components and signals tell them to do. If you don’t like what you’re hearing, I can assure you that it’s not the speakers’ fault -- it’s what you’re feeding them. They’re just doing what they’re told to do, within the context of what, thanks to Magico’s relentless drive to minimize distortion, they were designed to do: reproduce music with reference-level resolution.

Audiophiles who really want to hear their recordings, take note: Your invitation to join that club has arrived in the Magico S3."

Also in the wings is Myles' (CONGRATULATIONS!) review of the S5 at positive-feedback.

It's too bad Fritz didn't chime in on his thoughts of the S3, vis-à-vis the S5s...

Hopefully, there will be a follow up. Otherwise, he might chime in in the "Letters" section, where there are responses and comparisons offering insights outside the scope of a formal review.

Hi. someone with experience in combination Audio Research with Magico kHi.
Someone with experience in combination Audio Research wiht Magico knows if the AR Ref. 150 would be a good combination with Magico S3.

I haven't heard Audio Research amps with the S3 but the Absolare and Audio Note Kagura worked very well with the Magicos.

I suspect the combo maybe on the dry side.

Have you heard the combo?

Hi,

has anyone heard the S3s in the meantime, or is this a purely specs and reviews related exchange? Jonathan Valin also gave them a 'Best of Show' for last year's CES.

I have only found a few reviews of the Magico S3s, so the only option really was to listen to them. Heard them in a decent setup and was very convinced of the superb midrange (due to the separate enclosure), as well as the excellent bass definition. Do have to disagree with some comments I have seen the bass not being too much present in the lowest octave, but agree they do not have the typical ported speaker bloated bass overhang. I am a detail nerd though.

Heard them, ordered them.

Regards,
Kuoppis
