S1 bug in latest firmware

I just installed a test version of 5.0.11. Unfortunately, I have to go to work, so I will not be able to really test until tonight. If I can get to Friday without the white noise burst occuring then I will put the S1 into the main system for the definitve Friday night test. If I end up having to buy a new S5 tweeter I will be P.O.ed :)

Bud, Fridays haven't been good to you.

Bud,

I agree with Mark, please do NOT anger the Friday night spirits. Any day but Friday, LOL. :D

Best,
Ken

Sorry, Friday is the ultimate testing ground. Friday is why all this gear exists. :)

Anyway, this new test firmware seems to working pretty good. I decided to work from home today, and the Lumin has been running non-stop for six hours without a hiccup. If this continues until Friday then I will have no worries putting it into the main system. I am really looking forward to how it sounds there.

I have been testing the new firmware since Tuesday, and so far so good. Tuesday, I decided to work from home, and ran it for about 10 hours, and then about 4 hours last night with no glitches. If it works fine tonight then I will move the S1 into the main system. I am really looking forward to hearing it there, since it is sounding great in the HT system.

That's good news. Good Luck!

Excellent Bud! Been very busy all week with no time to listen. Certainly will consider the upgrade this weekend.

keep us posted!

The upgrade hasn't been released yet, but I can give you the link to download it, assuming it is still there. Just put it on a USB drive, and plug it into the S1 while the S1 is powered ON, but with no other USB devices attached.

Thx Bud. I'll wait then until it is released.

Sure, but if you get a burst of white noise like a burst of radiation from a neutron star then I appear to have the fix for that.

I want to publicly thank the Lumin engineer, Li, for his help in resolving this issue. As one who also develops software for networking gear, I truly realize how hard it is to identify and fix an intermittent problem that cannot be reproduced. After we traded emails on the symptom, and how is seemed to occur right after a new song started, he made a change in the networking code that appears to have resolved the issue. He mentioned that a USB attached drive is seen by the Lumin as a networked device.

Whatever was in the change has so far been flawless. Now that I have the S1 in my main system I am truly impressed at how good it is.

Li, thank you very much.

Bud,

Thanks for the info. I was having several occurances of this per evening....so am happy to hear it may be fixed. What is the version number of the firmware that fixes this ?? Has it been officially been released ??

Bud, this is great to hear!

So the gist of this is that using the Lumin with an external HD (not its optimum method I might add, but none the less, an option), produced some white noise. But Li and his team at Lumin have come out with a fix for this?

Mike, yes it appears to be fixed. I have been using the new firmware since last Tuesday with no issues. I don't know when they will release the patch to the public.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'optimum' in regard to a direct attached USB drive versus a NAS, or other method. I suspect from an audio perspective the USB drive is superior to a networked drive since it eliminates a lot of cabling and Ethernet hardware/software.

That is true!

I have to disagree. From my experience I get better SQ from data derived from a NAS.

You might be right, but unfortunately there are no absolutes in networked audio. While for you there might be a difference, that could very easily have been a defect in some component dealing with a direct attached drive. From a theoretical troubleshooting perspective, it really doesn't seem plausible that a file from a drive attached to a player would sound worse than the same file coming from somewhere on the net. At the worst, they should sound the same.

I just found a new bug in the firmware. Earlier I was listening to my female jazz singer playlist, and then cleared the playlist and loaded my rock playlist. The first few songs played okay, but then one of the jazz songs started playing. While the singer was a female, Pat Benatar, it definitely was not her song.

Time to send Lumin another email. Deleting a playlist does not clear memory, and your pointers get confused. LOL.

At least this bug will not break speakers, but it will ruin your mood. :)

It is plausible because if you have both a USB DAC or USB converter and an external USB hard drive plugged into your player you would be sharing the same bus which can cause jitter and noisy feedback from the external hard drive.

Yes, good example. That is why it is so hard to get 100% error free operation from any technology.
