RIP - Tom Petty

Oh no, this is horrible news!

One of my all time favorites. I just saw him in concert earlier this year...

RIP Tom!

Devastating news. He just completed that big tour. He played at Mountain Jam at Hunter mountain over the summer. I loved his music.

So much great music from this artist, but much of my listening experience was of poor quality. An early hits compilation was among the best selling first generation CD's and sounded as thin and bright as you can imagine. Meanwhile, his pioneering work in music video resulted in my hearing some of his best work on grotesque-sounding 1980s television speakers. Then there were the heavy rotation FM singles built to win the loudness wars. To murder a quote from Winston Chuchill, "Never was so much great music played for so many that had good sound quality for so few." You could say he was, sound-quality speaking, a victim of his own success.

Luckily, last years vinyl Greatest Hits release from UMe (universalmusicenterprises) is a quantum upgrade in sound quality. I had a football coach who told me "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken s&*t." But this edition is highly listenable and brings Tom's singular brand of great rock n roll to life. Snap it up before the usual retailers run out of stock. RIP.
