Review: Harbeth Super HL5 Plus ....

They are still available. The only reason I don't have them is because I am on the hook for Strads AND 40.1's.

I still think about them and am so close to trying them too but I am not sure I'd have the resources.

I don't know Joe, did you ever talk to your friend who wanted to sell his Devores'?

Joe

It's too bad the way this whole 40.1 deal has worked out. Appears you might have been mislead somewhere to be on the hook this long for a product they can't deliver in a timely fashion. Appears all their efforts and time went to the new speaker while they let the rest of the line sit. Since the factory is local, might be worth going to listen on a day off.

What model DeVores? :skeptical:

Joe, I agree. How long has it been now??

Chris

It is the 0/96.s. They, the Offrande Supreme and the big AN are the direct competitors to the 40.1. I guess Spendor would be there too if they have a comparable model. I guess that would be the SP1,

Probably just bad timing all around. Some dealers probably had them in stock.

Chris,

0/96's and 3 months.

Just for the record, Harbeth UK were awaiting a key component to manufacture the M40.1 bass unit and were initially let down by supply problems. Thankfully this has now been resolved and back orders are being completed. It was not connected to the new Supper HL5plus as this does not use the 12inch unit.

Thank you so much for the update and thank you for joining.

Anybody out there gotten any listening time on the HL5 Plus yet .. ?

as in the 35th anniversary ed? As with other special ed Harbeths its their excuse for a price increase. I liked them fine, not as crazy for them as others on here. The guy that bought my set had them up for sale last week on a'gon, the rosewood pr with sklylan stands. These were my 2nd pr of Harbeths, I had P3sers before that.

Before Alan shaw took over Harbeth, Spendor pretty much ruled the roost with BBC-type monitors. Back in the day I owned the SP1/2, SP100, S3/5, FL-8 and three prs of Ls3/5as (incl 15 ohm vers. and 'white belly' Chartwells). For those that love the Harbeth 7es, try a set of Spendor sp2/3 every bit the 7es equal and then some (me thinks they're superior).

What gets little love around here and is at the very least equal to, and some think superior to Spendor and Harbeths are ProAcs. same BBC-centric design mindset w/o the chesty mids. More of everything esp transparency and neutrality. the D two, D18 and D40r are standouts.

Hello,

My personal ears do not agree on the ProAc point.
I was a huge huge ProAc lover 15 / 20 years ago, with the Resonse line, especially the Response 3 that was my dream speaker at that time.
"Sound
Splendid! Stunning! Gorgeous! Breathtaking! Whew—these are killers—KILLERS—K-I-L-L-E-R-S!!!" Stereophile, 1991.

If you never heard a piano on those ones, you really missed something.

During the late years, ProAc made a slight curve in sound, which after that became a U turn.
I understand ( well, that is tough to understand but let's say I understand...) how some people may prefer the highest resolution of the new gens.
But somehow, again to my ears, they lost a part of their magic. Of course, ProAc still makes among the very best speakers on Earth, but Oh Boy, how wonderfully magic were the old ones !

To my ears, Harbeth makes speakers sounding as resolving as the new ProAc, if not more resolving and accurate, but with the magic of the old ProAc's. And at least in Europe, they are cheaper than ProAc.
Easy choice for me.

Doug,

I love my 40.1's so much that I am considering adding the Super HL5 plus for fun/second system. All reports so far have been stellar. Regarding the 40.1's, bass is tremendous but can be tamed.

That's great to read.

Jerome is all in on Harbeth. NOW I know why. They are wonderfully musical speakers.

Doug, David Baskin has a pair in his shop and LOVES them.

Joe, how does the mid-range clarity and bass extension of the Harbeth 40.1's compare to your previous PMC IB2i's?
