Regen, Wow!

The Op said he didn't measure change and personally didn't hear an improvement. By the vitriol of some comments, he must have also raped their wife.

LOL. They are still going strong arguing over a $200 device. While I realize having audio as a hobby does require a bit of an anal personality, some of those guys need to be committed. :).

Yes, we all know if you just put a $2,257.00 Shunyata Sigma Digital power cord on your digital source, you don't have to worry about these silly $175. USB devises. ;-)

No, you need at least an $8K Tara labs cable. Go whole hog or dont bother!

Has anyone tried the Regen with a Lumin and a direct attached USB drive? I wonder if it can fit on the Lumin due to the overhang on the Lumin, and if a direct attached USB drive can be affected by these types of devices.

Bud, It should fit. It fits with the solid connector in my Devialet D200 which has an even tighter overhang. But, it also comes with a very short USB cable that allows more flexibility. It is supposed to sound better with the solid connector, but I can't really hear a difference between the two. I think the Regen is the best $175 I've spent.

If you really don't want to take the chance, I'll unplug it and see for sure if it fits with the solid connector in my S1. I know it will with the 3 inch cable cable. I've not tried the Regen with a direct attached USB drive.

Thanks. It seems like an inexpensive tweak if it helps, but I wonder if there is any difference in USB from a drive versus USB to connect two components.

Ok, late to the party here. Put my order in Sept. Just got my new modded Mac Mini back from Alex Crespi at Uptone Audio. He gave me "the works". He spec'd out the 1.1TB SSD and install the MMK fanless kit and well as retro'd the MM for his JS-2 Linear PS.

Hooked up the Regen last nite with the SMPS supply that comes with it. Listened to it with it in and out and out and thought "eh" it's an OK improvement. Maybe 3-5%. It's perceptible but not an OMG moment.

This afternoon I unpack the LPS and run it to the Regen. Now we are talking serious sound improvement. Sounds like a major component upgrade. Wow! Now I'm a believer. Music is revealing itself like it never has before. Listening to the double bass player in an orchestral piece, he no longer sounds like he is playing behind a thick velvet curtain but prominent stage right. Listening to James Morrison's The Nearness of You intro with layers of harmony, I can distinctly hear each voice clearly, close my eyes and I can see them too!

I'm now an apologist for the Regen and what it can do!

I haven't even hooked up the new MM yet either. Figure that transfer will take all night using Migration Assisstant without a Thunderbolt connection. Besides I can't tear myself away now!

I can only imagine what tomorrow's sound will be like with the new modded MM in the mix!

Thanks to all that pointed out this improvement. Well worth the while and the wait.

You have to run it with a LPS. I'm running mine with Teddy Pardo Ultra Low Noise linear PSU.

Hi Le Roy,

I hope all is well with you and you're settling in back in Austin. Thanks for your report! So the Regen with SMPS gave you a modest improvement but when you added the linear power supply (LPS) you got significant improvement...very interesting. What LPS are you using and do you connect both the Regen and the Mac Mini to it?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

It was in the body of his message:
Uptone Audio JS-2 Linear PS. and it has 2 outputs.

Thanks Norman, the Uptone modified Mac Mini looks like a great option. I currently run a stock Mac Mini. I love its build quality, software and flexibility. However, it was not designed to be a dedicated audiophile music server, so consequently, it leaves some performance on the table. Right now, if I decided to go the computer music server route, it would be between the Uptone modified Mac Mini and the Lampi Komputer. I would love to hear a head-to-head comparison. I'll be anxious to hear Le Roy's report once he puts everything in place. If I decide to take a different path, it would probably be between the Aurender N10 and Antipodes DX.

By definition Mac loses as it does not compete with PC (windows) anymore at the leading edge. Even Linux is now ahead in that they have ALSA drivers doing dsd256 while Mc is stuck with 128, except for Exasound Steinberg drivers.

In anycase, AO core mode beats any quiter setting for the Mac and PC can also use bespoke CHOSEN parts for each build including super clocks etc. Mac is too proprietary, and I LOVE Mac, so I wish it were otherwise.

BHE does not work with Mac. People say JRiver PC sounds better and Dafile is PC/Linux.

Norman,

So given the choice between the following, how would you rank them in terms of sound quality and utility?

Uptone Modified Mac Mini
Lampizator Komputer
Aurender N10
Antipodes DX

Thanks,
Ken

I am not able to rank them from a SQ pod as I would need to hear them in a shootout. However, if you are satisfied with the fixed players in Antipodes/Aurender along with their ease of use and elegant interfaces…then that is the way to go. If you want bleeding edge software player and optimized OS approach, then the PC server is the way to go.

So Lampi Komputer/Sound galleries Server/ DIY Caps server is a viable approach for the leading edge who want that Bughead Emperor = Reel to reel type of sound. These come with Win2012 Server and Linux in different partitions and choices of BHE/HQP/JRiver/Dafile as playback engines.

Aurender/Antipodes/Music Vault/The Memory Player/Baetis for the dedicated server build (likely using a form of Linux) for the high quality/ease of use/zero fuss crowd.

Modded MM is less expensive and very flexible with excellent but not leading edge SQ and NO BHE as a choice for playback. It can do HQP/JRiver/Audirvana plus, so pretty flexible and easier to setup than a DIY CAPs build, but you are stuck with Mac parts, vs the Caps that uses the best parts that money can buy.
