Regen, Wow!

I can understand the Regen improving the SQ when used on the USB output of a laptop/PC, but I'm doubtful it will produce any improvement on a server or file player with a USB output like the SOtM USB card.

Hi Dan: :peace:

I think you raise a smart point. Particularly given this post on another forum from Uptone:

"Regn places creation of new and clean USB signal right at the DAC. Kind of like an external version of an audiophile USB card (SOtM, Paul Pang, etc.), but at the correct end of the cable and not powered by the computer."

I am not the regen guru so I could be wrong but I think the boys at Uptone take it a step further and get additional improvement by putting the regen right at the dac which eliminates impedance loss through the usb cable that would otherwise make the phy work harder which makes noise cuz they are very sensitive little buggers. Clean power helps too but you can put that back at the pc.

So if you have crappy usb cables with long runs it can help a bit more.

So ordered one let's see. I do not see how it will help with a server or a redue or antipodes but we will see. If it's does not but makes a simple surface pro or other kairos or no server desktops it money well spent and it's cheap too.
I will post this for sure in many forums

Al - I look forward to hearing your impressions of the REGEN in your system. Just for what it's worth, there have been users with purpose designed dedicated music servers that have reported significant improvements with the addition of the REGEN. Of course as with anything in high end audio YMMV certainly applies as there are bound to be system dependencies.

Yes, Elberoth has said so too. It worked better in one of his setups than the other using his SoTA server.

I use a MM, and not a laptop and do get the same pleasant improvement in SQ. The better the combo of the output card and USB cable the less obvious improvement I would expect from Regen, but even there its still likely to get some benefit and for $183 delivered, its worth a shot.

Also, YES, Regen works best just before the Dac input, not just because of impedance but because there are other ways that USB cables can "damage" the SI of the transmitted signal.

Hooked up my Regen over the weekend and was very happy with the results. The music is so much more alive. Tighter bass, depth, separation, stage, all aspects have been positively affected. Probably the biggest bang for buck tweek I've ever ran across. I had already purchased a R-core power supply from a chinese ebayer, which was another $50, to replace the supplied SMPS. So actually two tweeks. I guess the next thing is to find a replacement for the short USB cable that was supplied to connect the Regen to the DAC. Anyway big thumbs up!

AE, any chance you can use he hard adapter instead of the short USB cable and tell what you difference you find doing it that way?

Unfortunately due to my entertainment cabinet I can't use the solid adapter ... yet. Have to make some adjustments to the back. I've seen enough feed back that makes me think that the solid adapter is noticeably better. So I'm anxious to give it a try.

I tried the Regen with my son's AudioQuest Dragon Fly DAC plugged directly into it and it transformed the sound to a much more HiFi sound. It smoothed things out and it had deeper bass with more punch. The background was blacker and it was more musical.

I did have a problem with using HQ player and the Dragon Fly. After about 5 minutes of play, music would drop out with and without the Regen. It worked fine with JRiver.

That's exactly what mine started doing tonight! It cuts out after 5 minutes or so. It doesn't seem to interact well with USB cables with filtration like my Straight Wire USB-F.

I wonder why??

Just received my Regen yesterday and have been checking it out. Wow is all I can say too!

I stayed up until 2:30 last night listening, couldn't pull myself away. Hearing new things in music I've been listening to for 40 years, without feeling that it's spotlit or etched. And the bass is indeed badass. Color me very impressed with this little gizmo.

What source is feeding the Regen?

Laptop with Jriver and cheap USB cable, nothing fancy! I'm just starting to dip my toes into computer audio.

Saw a post from Alex at CA last week. He has shipped over 1,000 onits since launch in May. Impressive for a California (Bay Area) garage operation.

The New HP? LoL

I haven't written a whole lot about the REGEN, but I've had one in/out of my system for a couple of months now. There is no doubt in my mind it makes a difference. What I found is that it tightens the imaging and quiets the background (the last part I didn't notice until I hooked up my 107db efficient speakers!). To be honest, I don't fully understand how it works and I especially don't think that stupid little thing should make that much of a difference - but it does, it really does.

Now, I am just using the little pig tail USB adaptor that came with it. I am assuming that others have swapped that out and either found a difference or not?
