Record cleaning machines

With my last effort of cleaning with the KLAudio I added 100mls of white vinegar to the 2 ltrs of distilled water, best clean I have done yet & not one sign of finger prints or smudges etc anywhere.

Well that is an interesting option. Did you by chance talk with Tim at Klaudio as to any side effects to the machine walls and electronics? I'm willing to take an adventure and try new things.

Never asked, just did it. I know the cleaning properties of vinegar & was really pissed at the finger prints etc still obvious on an lp after 2 cleans without it in the mix.

I wont add anything to the KL water tank, however for every first clean, I manually scrub the record with an enzymatic solution, dry it off and put in the machine. That removes any oily substances. My concern with adding stuff to the water, there will be residue...little as it may be of the solution you used whether vinegar or other once dried. .

I agree. I'd be concerned what the acetic acid and especially the impurities might do to the US generator with time. Definitely check first and a phone call is a lot cheaper than a repair bill.

This one looks interesting:

The KL is $4,000 bucks! Last years, August 2014. I spoke with Tim and he said that I could add a drop of surfactant. However, I read the manual cover to cover and I have read every single word on the the KL website. In writing, they make it very clear that adding any other than water will void the warranty. As tempting as it was to add something, even though Tim said I could. I would have a tough time proving that Tim authorized it without it being in writing. I'm glad I didn't my first KL unit was defective and about a month ago, Tim replaced my unit with an updated edition. Had I added something, I am confident they would detect it and invalidate my warranty. It's $4,000 bucks!

As you all know, I have acquired myself a bunch of Vinyl Cleaning Machines. I just ordered another one today...stay tuned!

Anyway...

I just called Klaudio. Tim is in Munich right now. I spoke with Todd. I spoke to him at length about adding additives such as a surfactant, vinegar or other cleaning elements. I learned the following:

Todd emphasized that what they 'Klaudio' does not know is the interaction between the hardware [metal and non-metal components] and chemicals. Todd specifically drove concerns about harm coming to the ‘O’ Rings that are made of EPDM Rubber. Though, he believes [unverified] that a trace/small amount of additive will not cause harm. Again, an unknown variable.

I further asked, if someone returned the unit and had used an additive, is this observable on your end? Todd’s answered, no, not really. The damage would have to be visually apparent or detectable by scent. Of course, lab testing equipment could be used to see if any actives were used if Klaudio was to explore to such an extent.

He emphasized, proceed at your own risk!

I really enjoyed talking with Todd. I told him all about my many cleaning machine set ups and what I am doing. He asked that I keep him in the loop and gave me his email address.

Todd was really receptive and I really appreciated his positive attitude. Very nice guy!

Wow! Another one ordered?! Well, if you have the means, keep going Golucid. I really like your study of these machines, it's interesting and it's great info for all.
I studied record cleaning in general before I even did my first one, but I try to stay abreast. I don't have the means for another RCM, I had to save just for my VPI 16.5, but it does a good job for it's pluses and minuses. Of course, it's really only a platform and vacuum, it's the correct fluids used correctly and methodology that does the real work, the 16.5 just helps with the rest and we are thankful none the less compared to when I first started. That said though and even though I only have a little over 400 records, I am considering saving for that V-8 US machine or whatever it's called, I think as an addition, but I have a few questions. I'll be talking to the guy that makes them though.

I'm looking forward to reading about your findings with the Clearaudio contraption too.

If you ever want me to RCM any of your disks on my machines, I'd be happy to do so. I can document all my procedures. PM me and we can sort it all out. Be happy to be your test platform. I'm really enjoying all of this. I do not have the answers but I sure am willing to try everything! It's totally kewl to have all the machines and kick back and give it all consideration.
