Raidho D1 speakers and amplifier recommendations

Actually I see the Strads already have the requisite votes on Devialet's SAM page - a gentle email prod will get them on the move....

I find this fascinating. From what I understand the German publication Stereo Magazine is tough minded and respected. And here it states that the D1's sensitivity is 76.2 hmmmm :hmmm:. As I understand it for every 3 db drop in sensitivity you need to double the power output of the amp in watts to get the same SPL as measured in the room.

Let's say for the sake of illustration that Raidho claims (and I don't know that they do) that the sensitivity of the D1 is 85 db. But for this exercise let's use 85 db.

Raidho states on their web site that it would take 50 watts and up to drive the D1's.

But if the difference is really 85 db - 76.2 db (as measured by Stereo Magazine) this comes to 9 db difference rounded off.

So with a difference of 9 db in sensitivity we would have to double the output power of the amp three times!

50 x 2= 100
100x2= 200
200x2= 400 watts

Has this been anyone's experience with the D1's? Or is there something missing "in translation", so to speak, with Stereo Magazine.

Or am I looking at this the wrong way? :skeptical:

As I understood it 3db doubles (or half's) the loudness. In order to double the loudness you need 10 times the power. Human hearing is logarithmic and not linear. But then again I could be wrong. It's been 41 years since I learned that stuff.

Le Roy you did hear my D1's with approx 90W of tube power. Although we didn't play them very loud either.
 
You're fighting a double edge sword. They need some power, but they can't play really loud (but loud enough for some).

That being said, from my experience owning them, the 76db number could be right. I was able to drive them nicely with a VAC PA100/100 - about 110/ch. So, at a normal listening level of 88db for example, I was only using about 16 watts (not accounting for dynamic peeks of course). Once you start cranking it past 90, you are starting to get into a different class (meaning ballsy) kind of amplifier, but then, you run into the limits of the speaker. It's definitely a delicate balance trying to determine the right power. I would GUESS 200 watts would be a real good number to target. Flea watt tube amps need not apply for this job.

Using 50W is about right, any more and they will pop. However, if you are playing them that loud, then you will find that the dynamics will sound much more musical and real if you have 300-500W on tap to use for the peaks. Only having 50W will give you great sound but will be compressed when played loud compared to what D1s will actually do.
 
Great advice from all of you. I'm learning a lot here on AS. D1s arrived last Thursday and did some listening with various amps including a Devialet 200. To make a long storey short I have Devialet 400 on order, my Claytons are going up for sale, and my tube amp will stay in my study. The Deviate sounded cleaner than any of the others with a fuller soundstage, and astoundingly accurate mid and bass. The sheer utility of this product is amazing; in addition to the Claytons being sold, so will two preamps (anyone want a Audio Tekne Simona tube preamp and/or Coincident Statement Lifestage?) a myriad of cables (Pierre Gabirel, Nordost) and power cords. Wow, this is like going from a rotery dial phone to an iPhone 6.
