Thanks for the Horch House link Mike. Exciting to hear they're going to try this. Of course, curious to know the cost and whether they will also develop a tape pre.

Mine is a complete rebuild. Jeff Jacobs at J-Corder did all the work. Myles helped me by giving me a road map of specifically what to get done, what brand of parts I should use, etc. I know Jeff stocks ready to go fully modded Technics 1500's.

Mike...Very promising. It would be great to see the manufacture of pro class R2R again.
Finding a vintage deck still running to or plus specification is very difficult and expensive to come by.
There aren't many options beyond the J-Corder Technics resurrections.
The Studer A810 MkIII outputting via A820 transofless cards is my favourite piece of HiFi. 2016 is the year I shall devote recording time to it. It is wired to the C1000T Rec-out, ready to go. Plan to hang a Korg DS-DAC-10R ADC off the other rec path.
I just need to decide on which tape stock to use.

the number Horch has thrown around is $5k USD. if they hold that price it will be the bargain of the century for a NEW deck with german/swiss pedigree.

Yes, I'm in trouble. 
Mike had the Jacintha 'Here's To Ben' on tape, currently one of my favorite LPs. We played 'Danny Boy', my favorite track on the album. When Jacintha starts the song in acapella, I find her phrasing and singing dramatic and mesmerizing. I know this track well and love hearing the Groovenote 45rpm on my Sparta.
As good as that combo is, the R2R is better still. It's smoother, more liquid, and much more detailed but in a natural way! Of course, Mike's great system has a lot to do with it! I wish I had more time to listen to more tracks, but had to get ready for work tomorrow...
Bonus took a big tank this year

Al, you can swing for R2R. when the CH Precision sells buy the Horch and the rest can go to tapes and a cheaper DAC. Lets be honest, how many digital files have you recommended versus LPs and you know how tape sounds:heart:
The Horch R2R would be a great bargain especially if the electronics are comparable to any of the newer Tape prepro units, which generally cost more than the projected price of the Horch.
I have been encouraged about the number of small companies, beginning with the Tape Project, about seven years ago, that are issuing high quality 15ips 2 track tapes. I have about 100 albums from most all these folks, which at this point may be a majority of all the tapes that have been issued so far. The cost is, and will remain, very high. I think I have spent well over $25K for the 100 albums (some having one tape, others two tapes), much more than I spent on my two machines (one a Bottlehead Technics 1506 with Bottlehead playback electronics only, and the other a used Otari MX-5050BIII with original electronics). The reason for the ongoing high cost is first, the cost of the raw tape itself with only one or two manufacturers around, and second that all the tapes are copied in real time, usually in batches of one each (since the equipment cost and upkeep is another major consideration). It is definitely a cottage industry, and most likely will remain so.
I have been pushing different folks to at least dip their toes into the R2R tape stream, and so far Todd Garfinkle of MA Recordings has issued one tape. I hope to announce a second company soon (I've been working on them for over three years!). It does take a critical mass of R2R audiophiles who are willing to support these folks, before it comes close to making economic sense. Right now I think that just about everyone in the R2R tape album business is doing it as a labor of love. They all have other jobs to keep bread on the table.
As far as the new vinyl, there is and will continue to be a big difference. As a classical music buff, I have a vinyl collection big enough that I can play multiple version of just about any piece I want to hear. That is definitely not the case with R2R.
