Posting etiquette

I was surprised to read through this thread here since this place was created to get past all that which goes on at other sites. I do understand how people can take sarcasm personally and overall, I am one very sarcastic smart ass most of the time. I have learned to curb that here and other places. That said, I also have a thick skin and don't let anything said on message boards get to me. Everyone has their own experiences and opinions which I can respect even if I don't agree with them.

When I first joined a message board 20 some years ago, I landed on the Cables Forum of Audio Review. If anyone here remember that place from then, you will remember Mtrycraft and his Band of Merry DBTers and Naysayers. I took a beating there for about 2 years and alot of the time, I was pushing buttons just to fire them up. No matter who or what was posted about cables, one of that crowd would immediately berate you, tell you you were an idiot and demand the results of your DBT because all their White Papers, not personal experience, contradicted your personal findings.

I learned some valuable lessons then on just how whacked cyber people can act and be. I see it here in very small doses and most of it is as MEP said, sarcasm. That said, I also agree with others comments on how it depends on how you say it and just how 57 different people with different levels of sense of humor will take it.

This Forum is supposed to be a place where we do not need to police that kind of activity and posting. We all seem to be in a similar age bracket and all old enough to understand and show respect for all. If we were a bunch of 20 somethings who can't speak a whole sentence or answer a question properly, I would expect different and move on to another location.

People have to remember this is mostly all anonymous cyber bullshit and you know what they say about opinions and assholes :)

Everyone take a deep breath, walk around the block, and get over the fact that some people are more sarcastic than others but really do not mean to belittle or degrade another poster.

Cheers!

There is enuff irony in Mep's post to repair the bridges our esteemed Supreme leader cant, yep ! Mr sarcastic cant handle it himself, ask me how i know .....

:)

Not trying to be a jerk but I didn't get what you said, but would like to. I would like to ask you how you know what you know but first would like to understand what you know before I ask you how you know it. "

Esteemed leader can't repair bridges"???

Also, I presume you are implying Mr. Sarcastic is Mark but what do you mean he cant handle himself? Can you be more specific for us slow guys (oops that part was sarcastic).

What he said.

Tape still rules and digital is still ifi.

When I was a boy I used to play R2R carefully and smash transistor radios unceremoniously to see what was inside.

I suppose it's best not to climb high too quickly else you will all die of extreme altitude sickness.

R2R is okay for hours of uninterrupted background music, but for serious listening one needs a decent file server/DAC combo. Is that okay from an etiquette perspective? Where is Miss Manners when you need her? :)

The way I see it is that there is no inflection in written word. Sarcasm can be humorous in audio form or spoken word, but can often times not be detected in written form in and of itself. Just as it is impossible to detect accent in written form, but can always be heard from the person speaking audibly. Sarcasm can come across as insult very easily in written form unless it is noted as sarcasm. Nobody is a mind reader. It’s not at all about a lack of sense of humor. It’s a limitation on language form.
Just the way I see it, I could be dead wrong and way off in which case, just ignore me.

i love sarcasm and humor, Mark. keep it up.

this forum definitely is more reliant on gear swapping than others- it will be interesting how it expands its presence over time. to be honest, i tire of basically what are now unpacking threads and just skip over them (hence why i never read the record cleaner thread highlighted).

the most interesting thing on the forum in recent memory was Ryan @ Vapors breakdown of Magico cabinets in a more technical fashion with pros/cons. we need more of that.

A. Wayne is full of innuendos, but short on proof. He made mention of a tier 2/3 reviewer that has his speakers spaced 3' apart and I asked him to elaborate and name that person, but he has yet to do so. I told him I'm probably a tier 10 reviewer, but I damn sure know that my speakers aren't 3' apart. So now he is saying he has some 'dirt' on me that he will spill if someone asks him to. Whatever.

And having said that, I very much appreciate everyone here who 'gets me' and my sense of humor and has supported me in both public and by PM. We all have some people we don't like and sometimes we find out later in life we made a decision not to like someone for the wrong reason and they really are OK.

I have been around this hobby for a very long time (I wish it was much shorter because that would mean I was much younger) and I still learn new things all the time and I hope that never stops. Andre is coming to my house this Saturday and bringing a spectrum analyzer with him. I'm hoping we can get some more bass punch from my two subs without sacrificing the smoothness and extension I have now. If not, I will have to rethink my next step in this journey and probably go back to the future of 1/4 wavelength transmission line subs designed and built by me.

This forum reflects the man who owns it, and it will be run as he sees fit. The forum was meant for all of us to share our love and knowledge of our great hobby, not to criticize and belittle people. Most of our members joined here to escape the other forums where that is common practice. So, if you feel like you can obey the spirit of Mike's dream, you're always welcome here. If not, there are other places out there.

By "criticize and belittle people" I hope you are referring only to ad hominem attacks? There's not much point in having a forum if no criticism is allowed; otherwise (as I posted earlier) you just have a blog.
