Popes also get composers to write pieces for them. When we visited Dave and Iola Brubeck at their home in CT in 1987 he showed and played test recordings for us of excerpts from the piece he was writing for the Pope's mass at Candlestick Park in San Francisco later that fall. I didn't ask whether Dave got paid for writing the piece. I found this memoire by Brubeck about the experience that he did in 2007, just a few years before he died.
