PMC Twenty 26 vs. 23

OK...so this is a little better:
Allow me to side-track/OT, my own thread: can someone give me the Reader's Digest version...on the idea of slabs or platforms, under floor-standing speakers?
Chris when I had the Raidho D1's on granite slabs the one thing that really jumps out you is everything. I mean more forward all around. The highs and mids were more pronounced with the lows tightened up. I really liked it but I now have the D2's and never put the granite slabs back in. The reason is the highs and mids are already a bit more pronounced with deeper lows (extra driver and a lot more cabinet).

That said my room is carpet over concrete. I've heard the speakers (D2's) with and without the slabs at my dealers and friends where the dealers is wood over concrete and my friends is suspended wood. The difference was so small I had to 'squint' real real hard to hear the difference. Also with Raidho the feet have bearings in them. Not sure if that has any bearing (pun intended) compared to spikes on the sound with or without the slabs. Last depending how thick the slabs are you will be raising the speaker by that much.

Do you guys, think maybe I should flip-flop the contenders? Give the little brother, the "advantage"...of the w i d e r placement??
Besides placing them where the big brother is I would move the big ones out of the room. Listen to them for a couple of weeks then throw the big ones back in their place.

Yeah, I know...ideally. But damn...that's a LOT of work; and takes the "real-time" A/B switch, out of play.

Chris the best way to compare equipment is to listen for an extended period of time (1-2 weeks) then revert back. That way you hear all of differences and not what jumps out and bites you on the snot bump.

Excellent advice. Also the speakers are not even break in yet.

Totally agree with this

So...allow me, to "defend" the 23 a bit. My experience is different, from Womaz's...in that, I am coming from the BIG speaker, to the smaller.

He wanted to see the 26s be bigger and "better", than his 23s; and it's just a different signature, from SFs I'm sure. But my take is different.

Is the 26 "better"; sure...probably. But looking at it, from the "I've had 26s...how much, do I lose down-sizing to the 23s"; my take, is not as much as you'd think.

Now, yes...I'm on record as saying, a track like Send My Love; showed the 23s limitations, and the 26s really allowed the song to open up. That's a fine quality. But I will say...it's not apples to apples; we are definitely, looking at laws of diminishing return here ($11k, unless they've gone up...vs. $5k retail).

If someone were to ask me, about 23s vs. 26s...as many are, of course; the first question I'd ask..."how big is your room"? IMHO...the 23s, are a beautiful-sounding speaker; just on a slightly smaller scale, than the 26. That has minuses, and pluses to me. The 23s...have this kind of "intimacy", I get; like with Harbies.

Again...you're talking a 2-way 5.5" driver, floor-stander. TL or not...and it helps, believe me; but it's not going to light up a big room, or play at high levels...without some signs of strain, compression, or congestion. Then again...at other times; less is more!

Did the 23s get shipped back then.... You own the 26s I think they are excellent . How are you finding the comparison now?

I own both. No, the 23s and the comparison...aren't done yet. I'll share some thoughts, I've already penned...

So...would you be amazed to know; I had my gal-friend over for A/Bs yesterday. And while, her picks were mixed (and she was truly "blind"; she couldn't tell the "inner" from "outer" pair...only "better" now, or "better" now)...depending on material; she eventually, started to pretty consistently...pick the 23s.

And there were times, when she said..."practically the same"; and I can't say that I disagree with her.

Surprisingly...the biggest difference, was really in the bass. The 26 was more "accurate", but the 23 was more "visceral"...without being too boom, boom, boomey. The 23, was also a touch more forward; but again...not in a bad way.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 23s are awesome. Now, 2 things: 1) (as you know) my room is small. I think if we were 15' back, there'd be no question...the 26s would fill a room better. 2) This is, with the Luxman L-550AX. Maybe the other gear, will reveal more...to the advantage of the 26s?

So...I'm going to switch-out, to the Wyred STP/ARC VT-50 set-up; and see if that makes more distinction. They are BOTH, fantastic speakers IMO; very slight distinction...again, at least in my room and set-up. To the point, where on certain material...they were virtually indistinguishable from one another. :|

Thanks for the detailed reply. As you know I have some 26s on trial right now, and I find the difference between them and the 23s massive. My room is 14ft by 23ft so that might be bigger than yours, not sure.
For me the bass is in a different league and overall just a more fuller sound. Much more detail too,.......when i put the 23s back in they sound like I have stuck some ear buds in.......so cloudy and thin.
Looking forward to further updates

Yeah Womaz...I don't think, there's anything; for you to take, from my comparisons. Your room is wider, than mine is long...lol (I'm a cozy, like 13' x 12'). I also suspect, your Devialet and this Luxman; are like apples and grapefruits as well.

Doesn't seem like, there's any reason...for you, to fret over 23s or 26s; your decision, is 26s or Olympicas, yes?

Yes for me it is the 26s or the Olympicas.......probably favouring the latter, although i wish they had the bass of the PMCs......never satisfied ;-)
