Physical Media beats downloads

But the real story is streaming beats them both. “Of course, both pale in comparison to revenue brought in from streaming, which has taken over the music industry in recent years.”

“Downloading” music may come to be seen as a relic of this era. I have plenty of downloads, but my oldest child is 13, has never downloaded music (unless it is a temporary hold from tidal to get through a flight), and doesn’t understand the need to use space for it. I tend to agree.

Streaming will the future for the average consumer but; physical media (LP and CD) will live on for the audiophile. Streaming just doesn't have every title available. Likewise in the video ; Netflix/Amazon Prime has been great for the cinephile to find and discover new content. However; so many titles available on disc that aren't and won't ever be on streaming service. Same as audio.

Choosing things we want to use is something we need to preserve.

You are correct, streaming does not have every title available, but then few of us care. If I can't find something I listen to something else. I have no need to keep and maintain all of the music I have owned. In fact on a regular basis I go through my CD's and servers and get rid of those albums haven't listened to or have no desire to listen to again. Of course there are a couple of hundred albums I will always keep, but if it wasn't for new music I would have little interest in this hobby.

Also use streaming to check out new things, but quality is still better through physical media, such as LP and hi-res downloads.

CD can also be good, but it is limited to 16 bits which of course is a bummer. Lately I have noticed that I have less interest in CD quality material, as it just does not sound as good as vinyl or digital hi-res.
