Hello AS’s

Writing to see what everyone’s thoughts are on packaging; what they think of it, what they do with it, does the others in the house want it around?

Now we know it’s somewhat taboo to discard the original packaging in case of warranty or repair, aside from the inevitable trading up. There is some serious thought that’s goes into encasing your components, speakers and cables.

As I have assembled my system it quickly accumulated starting with well constructed cardboard boxes of size. Fiber boxes at the onset of this journey now seems to be followed by an accumulation of wooden jewel type boxes and crates taking up even more space.

My wife finally fed up at looking at all these empty boxes wasting space in an intrusive manner and believing it all represents a waste of money - she blows up and yells at the top of her lungs, “get rid of this S#$T and I mean now”, I exclaim, “but honey you don’t understand”.

Understanding what WAF now means from being on this site, and somewhat fortunate to have a warehouse, I reluctantly agreed to move all my audio packaging into storage where they are shrunk wrapped onto pallets, placed in upper level racking, out of sight and traffic.

For those that don’t have commercial warehouses, are these boxes piling up where your significant other is saying WTF?

Where are you keeping them; the garage, spare bedroom, attic?

Here is the jewel box, and must say beautifully crafted and I now have 6 of these, with one on display and the others getting ready to move out to the warehouse as these in cumulative are the same size as a reference speaker:

Here is my neighbor carting off speaker crates I made him keep in his garage, later making him and his friend cart them to my facility on his way to Portland. It was already bad enough before these came along and I knew if my wife seen these, it would of sent her off the deep end:

Well I hope you share how you manage these byproducts of great sound - Happy Listening!

I have yet to buy anything that comes in crates, but the majority of my attic contains empty boxes for all my audio-video-appliances, some from the 90s. All the smaller boxes from cables are in my small workshop with tubes, cables, connectors and feet.

Attic and Garage. I do put boxes inside of boxes. Like filling up the speaker crates with boxes...i do save everything. Mostly for resale one day

I rent a storage unit. Gets the Christmas stuff and other things out of the garage too.

I have flooring in my attic and overhead storage shelving in my garage. This holds all of the larger boxes. The overhead storage units in the garage are quite spacious. One of them held all 3 Wilson crates and also handles all 3 Avantgarde boxes.
For smaller items I have a closet with shelving in my audio room.

I sure do miss my attic in our home in S.C. , You could store lots of stuff and the builder even built the attic to contain another room up there, if needed. . PS everything you see is "Christmas Stuff".

garage crates 001.JPG

garage crates 006.JPG

The first picture is of the huge Magico S5 crates turned into storage units for other stereo boxes. The front is on hinges which makes inside access quite easy.

The 2nd picture is of old Wilson Witt crates that I kept and turned into inside shelving, hinged front doors and the pegboard to give easy access to tools.

That's a touchy subject indeed. Most people here do like Mike, and just get a storage unit. The ones that keep stuff in the garage end up forfeiting one of the car spots, with all the crates and stuff taking up space...
We actually keep some of the crates/boxes for our clients, so our stock room is fairly packed, all the time :)

cheers,
alex

when i had some massive speaker boxes i rented space on top of my sons wardrobes for a nominal fee , he was glad of the cash .i always keep packaging in case of selling

I recommend saving all boxes if you can. I save every box. Attic, basement, garage, spare room or storage unit.

Ken

I keep the shipping boxes for my high end audio equipment in an interior guest bedroom walk-in closet. The boxes for the A/V equipment end up in the attic. Over the years I've used the original shipping boxes for repairs, upgrades, and moving.

Keep them, if at all possible. Moving and/or selling is too high a probability.

I have 2 attics to store boxes in. One, walk in, over part of the first floor and one over the second floor for smaller boxes that I need a ladder to get to.
