This could be pretty interesting. I'd love to hear it.

No TIDAL or Roon integration? How about future support for MQA?

Cyril

Tidal integration is included. Like many others MQA is a future update. For right now still don't understand every ones concern about MQA. Tidal has not made an addition in almost a month to the pretty dismal list of releases. Hell they haven't even bothered to sort them or take advantage of the list compiled by other sources. The initial push was probably to satisfy the investors from Sprint. If they or others providers and content owners start to take it more seriously then it would be a concern. Don't have a clue about being Roon ready. If the 105 is I would guess the Soncica and the 205 would be too.

Mine will be here Tuesday and Dan Wright should have gotten his this afternoon or tomorrow and is going to start working on the two different mods. Curiosity got the best of me on this one.

Jap,

Thanks for the heads up.
Always good to know so much can be packed in at $799 which includes top of the line ESS chip, fully balanced design, front panel A-usb port and streaming! :)

Jack...Looking forward to hear your impressions and what Dan will come up with in terms of mods.

Randy
Mine has about 175 hours on it so still needs more time. It was a little on the harsh side to start with, but has smoothed out since. Great bass depth and definition out of the box. Streaming capability is a plus for someone looking for both a streamer and a quality DAC in one package. As with any new product of this type the app needs time to mature and add features which Oppo is known to do. It's main competition in this range would be the BlueSound Node 2 and the Aries Mini. Both have more mature apps and the Aries has the ability to add a 2.5" or SSD hard drive, but the DAC in both units is considerably inferior. In another week or so the break-in should be complete. I tried it for a couple of days in the Main system and still prefer the MP tube DAC so it will try to replace the DAC section in the Nuprime which will still be used for it's preamp.

Thanks Jack. As always some very good insight. I know the ESS 9028 Pro in the Benchmark DAC3 HGC is a substantial improvement over the ESS 9018 in the DAC2 HGC. It was apparent immediately and improved for the first week or so, so I imagine that the Oppo will continue to improve!

So any updates? I have considered this unit as a pure DAC and using the Benchmark as a stand alone headphone amplifier.

Randy,

If you are considering another dac, get the Musical Paradise MP-D2. It's a little more money but well worth it. I just sent the Sonica back but kept the MP.

Didn't like the Oppo? The Benchmark is very good, truly the only thing that bugs me about it is that they have chosen to only support DSD64. Using the ESS9028 Pro chip they could easily support higher....

Randy

Since the Oppo is built and ships from S.F. and comes with a 30 day money back guaranty you ought to just order one and try it. You would only be out the shipping which to Florida was only $16 dollars. If you are in the "transparency and detail" camp you will like it and the full streamer capability is just a bonus. Joe and I both tend to favor the slightly "warmer" side of things so all things being equal we would chose the MP first. I am keeping mine and it now probably has over 300 hours on it. Whether Oppo ever decides to get in bed with Roon or MQA only time will tell, but that is not a significant factor to me. With the STP-SE and the ARC in the system it might provide a good balance. The Sonica app will surely mature over time with upgrades just like the app for the 105 has.

I think Sonic the Hedgehog would approve of this dac/streamer
