Opinions on TAD CR-1 vs Magico S1 ? ....

Joe
I love my S5s with constellation and tube arc gear. So smooth and resolute and tight deep low end. I bet you would find the sweetness and extension you crave. I have to believe your tads would eclipse the s1 speakers in low end extension tho

Joe,

Let me throw another suggestion at you if you are looking to stay in the "monitor" size. And a plus is speakers from this company love tubes. I had an earlier version and loved them. Only downside is very limited dealer network in this country. The distributor, Bob Neill from Positive Feedback, is in Amherst, Ma.

Jack,

Thank you very much. I'll read the review and check them out. I appreciate all suggestions!

Thanks Darrin,

I know you love your system and remember the journey you were on to finally discover Magico/Constellation/ARC. I hope to hear them tomorrow.

From following Bob's journey when he was still working for PF as an equipment reviewer, he went in several different directions including Harbeth before he settled on Reynaud. He believed in them so much he became the US distributor and then resigned as an equipment reviewer for PF. You might want to call or e-mail him and discuss his journey. He is a "good guy" and very knowledgeable of the "high end" audio scene. When I owned the three different Reynaud models a while back, I too was in that constantly looking mode and foolishly sold off several speakers, amps and pre-amps I wish I could get back. Though I am more than happy with the Vandersteen 2CE Sigs and the pair of Vandersteen subs, I would re-buy the Offrandes if the opportunity presented itself. Sometimes you go in a circle. I don't know how far it is from NYC to Amherst, but it might be worth a road trip to see what he has.

Jack,

I am sure it's worth checking out. I love they way they look and they seem very tube friendly.

Since I have kept the pair of Vandersteen 2WQ subs throughout the speaker journey at this house I ran the Offrandes on a 35 WPC Music Reference RM-10 with the subs augmenting everything below 65hz. I have run them on their own with the Granite Audio 861 mono-blocks at 60wpc with KT-88's and they went down into the low 30's. The CJ's should be a perfect match and if yours have the CJ romantic house sound even better. If I remember correctly Bob runs them with hybrids.

Thanks Jack,

It's funny you mention the Music Reference amp. I may be getting my hands on an RM-200. It seems like a great piece. It's getting exciting. Thanks!

Roger's tube amps are as good as you will find for "normal" prices. I don't think the higher price stuff even comes close though there are others who will disagree. He goes back to Beveridge amps and speakers. You can read his profile on his website. His preamp the RM-5 is one of the pieces I still regret selling. The RM-200, like the RM-9 are classics that have not been surpassed even though they have been in production for many years. Put the RM-200 on the TAD's and you may hear something different than what you have heard before.

:exciting: OMG!

I can't wait. Thank you for the recommendation.

To me the TADs have more resolution, more detail than the S1s or the S5s for that matter. The trade off is that the Magicos are more coherent than the TADs.

If you want the additional resolution then the Q series would be better. NOT recommended by me tho.

But my guess is since you moved on from the EMM Dac2x that detail and super resolution isn't your cup of tea. Speaking of - why do you still have the TADs?

My thought for the night.

Hi Jock,

I still have the TADs because they are and can be absolutely amazing. With the CJ GAT/ART combo or the Job 225 and a tube preamp, it is stunning.

+1.

I'd add that Raidho's (IMHO) have more resolving power than both the TADs and the Magicos.

Personally, I found the TAD's a bit bright and a little forward, especially with some amplifiers. Need care with amps and cable to get the best out of TAD. Seems to me that TAD's and tubes make tremendous sense so long as the tubes provide sufficient power.

Well said. I do think you are right. I have managed to bring everything into balance and that's why I am going back and forth. I believe I could eek a little more performance from my TADs if I placed them is a slightly bigger room. I have some thinking to do after I hear some more great speakers this weekend.

I look forward to your listening impressions, Joe.

re: TADs + Job + Tube pre: I'm 2/3 there, on order at least!:P

Hi Joe,

IMO the only way you will be able to move forward with your "speaker dilemma" is to get these speakers into your room for a home audition.

My thoughts are that the S1 will disappoint as they are a much less substantial speaker as the CR1, but may be not.

I would get the S5 and raidho D2 in for home audition (a magico S3 would have been perfect but does not exist unfortunately :P). I'm sure you have some excellent dealer relationships by now, so this should be doable.

I think the CR1 will be a tough act to beat personally but you may prefer the slightly different presentation of Raihdo or Magico. Both of these will work awesome on your DartZeel and CJ gear.

Good luck.

(A joeind CR1 vs S1/S5 vs D2 thread would be an awesome read!)

Agree. Q series to me was too resolute.
